Although Fortnite's battle royale mode might be what brought the game its incredible popularity over the past few years, it seems as if the game's might future might actually be focused on creative mode. According to Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney, creative mode will be revamped in the upcoming year, and could even give players the same tools that are used by the game's developers.

When a Twitter user asked Sweeney whether he considered Fortnite to be a game or a platform, the CEO responded by saying, "Fortnite is a game. But ask that question again in 12 months." This tweet alone gives a pretty clear indication that Epic has big plans for the mode, but Sweeney didn't just stop there.

In a few follow-up tweets, Sweeney also stated that he believes Fortnite will soon become a platform in the "1990s sense of the word," meaning a majority of content within the game will be created by other users. He also explained that the company is aiming to give players tools within creative mode that are currently only available to developers.

We can only speculate as to what this might mean, but it certainly points towards a promising future for one of gaming's most underrated modes. Fortnite's creative mode already offers a large handful of content, although it is often overshadowed by the game's wildly popular battle royale mode. With a 2020 update, creative mode might find itself at the forefront of the game.

It's no surprise that Fortnite would turn its focus towards its creative content, considering that a few of the most popular games of all time have a huge focus on user creation. Take Minecraft and GTA V for example. Both games have been out for years, and both games had a huge 2019, largely thanks to the massive amount of user freedom they offer. Considering Fortnite has seen a bit of a dip in its players base, this shift could very well help the game withstand the test of time.

Fortnite's new creative mode can certainly hold endless possibilities if executed correctly. Fortnite could even become a modern-day Arma 3, the game that spawned other titles such as PUBG and DayZ simply by giving players the ability to create mods. We'll just have to wait and see what exactly the revamped creative mode might include, but you can probably expect a huge update in the upcoming year.
