While it wasn't the first game to feature cross-play between more than one platform, Fortnite was by far the biggest and most influential game early on to make a point of bringing all console, PC, and even mobile players together. As a battle royale game where there can be up to 100 players in a single match, having as large of a player base as possible is essential to the game's survival. Granted, Fortnite is certainly not lacking in players on any platform, but cross-play is good for more than just making it easier to find matches. Having cross-play enabled makes playing with your friends, regardless of which console they have, effortless. If you haven't turned this feature on, here's how you can start a squad with your friends no matter what platform they play on.

Fortnite is in full swing with constant updates bringing new content from cosmetics, map alterations, vehicles, missions, secrets to discover, and bases to raid. All that can be done in addition to the game's normal mode of being the last team standing. Having a group to team up with for all these activities is by far the best way to experience them.

Why Enable Cross-Play?

Via Polygon

The obvious answer is to allow you to play with your friends. For years multiplayer games, even the same game, would not allow players to play together if they were on different systems. You might both be playing the latest Call of Duty, for example, but if you were on PS4 and your friend on the Xbox 360, you might as well be on different planets. Now, in part thanks to Fortnite, cross-play is becoming more and more common between platforms. Even if you or your friend only has the game on their phone, while the other plays on PC or console, there's nothing stopping you from hopping into a game together for some fun.

Another major benefit that comes with enabling cross-play in Fortnite is cross-progression. Because Fortnite is on basically every platform there is, your progress can also be moved between platforms. You could be playing on your PC one day, then the next carry on making progress towards completing your battle pass on mobile the next, all while keeping all the cosmetics and items you've unlocked.

How To Turn Cross-Play On

The first step you will need to take to make sure cross-play works smoothly is to make sure you have an Epic account and add your friends to it. If you're playing mostly on PC or mobile, you will already have done this, but console players may need to jump online and set this up. This friends list is different from your PS4, Xbox One, or Switch friends list, so if you have a lot of friends you want to add it might be a little bit of a pain. Once they are added on your Epic account you can return to your preferred platform and select them to join a party with.

The reason they make you do this is that, by default, you won't be matched up with players from random platforms. Epic doesn't want players from one platform to feel outclassed by coming across players on another that has an advantage due to hardware or controls. So, when you do join up with friends on multiple devices, the game will determine what type of players you will match with based on the "best" device being used in your squad. PC is the top, console second, and mobile being the bottom of the list.

The only feature holding cross playback right now is that there's no way to chat in-game with friends on different devices. To do that you'll need to use an outside service such as Discord.
