In July of 2017, Epic Games released a game known as Fortnite for paid early access. The original title for the game was known as Fortnite: Save the World. Save the World is a co-op sandbox survival game where there is a sudden appearance of a dangerous storm, causing a whopping 98% of the world population to disappear. What was left of the population would have to deal with dangerous zombies. Fortnite: Save the World is a bit like a combination of Minecraft and Left 4 Dead. Up to 4 players team up and cooperate in different missions on randomly generated maps, collecting resources, setting up fortifications and defenses, protecting survivors, and defeat waves of enemies.

But what made Fortnite explode in popularity was the free-to-play multiplayer mode, Battle Royale. Battle Royale takes the core for fundamentals of Save the World and applies it to a massive 100 player mutliplayer mode. This free-to-play battle to be the best out of a pool of 100 players has really been responded favorably by many consumers in the video game industry. There are updates to the game literally every week, these updates can sometimes change the map a bit. As these updates continue to come and go, many gamers have speculated that there is a story that is being told just by how the map changes with each season. When you look at the small details in certain areas of the map, you'll notice that there is quite the story that is subtly being told. Despite how crazy some of these theories sounded, some of them actually ended up true! So let's drop out of the battle bus, land safely, and explore 25 fan theories that could tell the story of Epic Games' huge hit.

25 Fortnite Does Not Take Place On Earth

via express.co.uk

This theory is further suggested by the game's wording in Save the World mode and various promotional materials. At no point in the game does it state that you are battling on Earth. It just may be heavily implied based on the landscape and surroundings being very earth-like.

But wouldn't the gravity mechanics in this game suggest it is not Earth?

Throughout the game and promotional materials, it always references the word "world" hence "Save the World," or "You are the world's best heroes," as well as the location being referenced as a "Mysterious world."

24 What Is Up With The Purple Rain Clouds And Why Do They Hurt?

via: Fortnite.asas.pro

One of the most defining features of Fortnite is the purple thunderstorm in the game's story as well as what shrinks the playing field in Battle Royale. This storm can rapidly cause damage to unfortunate players, destroying heroes and the hopes and dreams of players in Battle Royale in just seconds.

But why does a storm cause so much damage? Well, science suggests that what is happening in Fortnite is actually an acid rain storm. Basically, the purple storm rains down sulfuric acid on the map, battery fluid if you will. Speaking of battery fluid, notice how the characters spark a bit once they are caught in the rain. Yup, another bit of evidence to suggest that the purple clouds are raining down acid.

23 Ruined Houses, No Wildlife, Why So?

via forbes.com

The world of Fortnite seems so barren, and empty. The Battle Royale map has so many dilapidated houses, destroyed towns, and seemingly no sign of life (save for the players) anywhere. Why is it that Battle Royale has such a post-apocalyptic environment?

Just about everything in this game revolves around the purple storm.

Supporting the theory that the storm rains down acid rain, it would make sense that if this storm is frequent, that buildings, structures, and obviously life, even a light rain can cause so much destruction to the map and the environment.

22 Could Fortnite Take Place On Venus? (Unconfirmed)

via youtube.com (The Game Theorists)

The conclusion that Fortnite takes place on the planet Venus makes the most sense, or at the very least a place inspired by Venus. When you look at the image above depicting the planet of Fortnite, and another image of the land mass of Venus, you'll notice that the spot of land looks a bit similar to a part of Venus. This is provided that Venus was capable of supporting water, which is theoretically possible, but that is a separate discussion of its own.

The other strong case of this theory is that of the purple storm in the game.

The fact that the storm can actually hurt your character means it's not a normal bit of rain, in fact, it very well could be some sort of acid rain. One of the known facts about Venus is that it is known as the planet to rain acid.

21 How Big Is Fortnite Battle Royale's Map?

via epicgames.com

This doesn't have a whole lot to do with the lore of Fortnite, but the size of the large playing field does bring about the question of exactly how big is this game's map? While the map undergoes changes constantly, it doesn't seem to change in relation to size. According to a video from The Game Theorists, if you take the length of a crashed bus, assuming it is the size of a real-life bus, and use it as a measuring stick, the size of the map should equal roughly 2310 x 2310 meters or about 7,580-foot square.

20 Is Fortnite Going To Be Flooded? (Unconfirmed)

via pinterest.com

Fortnite features some very well thought out updates that always seem to tell a story, some of these updates leads to theories that at first may sound crazy, but later gain ground. A recent theory posted by reddit user u/MHC_Sweedee suggests that there could be a flood coming somewhere on the map for Season 5.

Certain towns may be completely flooded.

The description is a bit lengthy and out there, but considering the use of llamas in this game I wouldn't put this theory away from becoming true.

19 The Meteor Finally Landed

One of the big theories of what will happen in season 4 was that the mysterious meteor in the sky was going to eventually land down on the map. This was suggested throughout season 3 as meteorites were seen falling onto the battleground as the large meteor grew ever so closer, as well as some of the telescopes that were placed throughout the map.

But the biggest tease was the image from above suggesting that there will be an impact crater of some kind.

The meteor would indeed land right around the middle of the map in season 4.

18 Will Tilted Towers Be Destroyed? (Unconfirmed)

via forbes.com

Many people speculated that Tilted Towers would be hit by the meteor in season 4, that did not happen as the meteor landed a bit east of Tilted Towers.

Tilted Towers is one of the most populated locations on the map, so many people expected it to be altered to balance the action out.

A lot of players usually come around Tilted Towers due to its location around the center of the map, which also increases the chances of being the location of the eye of the storm. Epic Games could do something in the future in regards to this area.

17 Is There An Alien Invasion In The Works?

via youtube.com (keysjore)

A conspiracy of aliens was also a part of the season 4 theories. If you were to look at a well-enhanced photo of the meteor in the sky, you'll notice a large light silhouette looking like a UFO hovering behind it. In addition, there were missions added to Save the World that mention alien abductions. An alien skin would later be leaked for Battle Royale that looks like a fish bowl for a head and the rest of the body being that of a space suit.

16 Fortnite Superheroes Assemble!

via epicgames.com

With all the hype of Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War, including the cameo appearance of Thanos and even a temporary mode dedicated to him, it made a lot of sense for Epic Games to jump on the superhero trend that is going on. Before Season 4 started, Epic Games revealed some teaser images of a couple of superhero looking characters. Speculations led to thinking that they would be new skin or that there could be a superhero vs aliens battle mode. The former would eventually be confirmed by having new skins as seen in the image above.

15 What Does The "V" In V-Bucks Mean?

via metabomb.net

This theory isn't much related to the game's lore, but still fun to think about. Ever wondered what the V in V-bucks mean? Some fans have speculated what it could truly stand for. Perhaps they could be "Virtual Bucks," "Video Game Bucks," or maybe "Venus Bucks?" Well, the truth is there actually is an answer to it, the V in V-bucks stands for Vindertech. Vindertech Bucks or Vinderbucks are based on the in-game store where you can buy llama piñatas.

14 What Is Inside The Meteor? (Unconfirmed)

via IGN.com

Once season 4 began, a place called Dusty Divot appeared. Inside the impact crater is a research lab and at the center of it is presumably the meteorite that was seen falling in season 3. As you can see, research has already begun on what could be inside of the meteor.

Over time, the meteor has been glowing red, with something that appears to be a mechanical item inside.

No one is sure as to what it is, but it appears to be some sort of alien technology, but it won't be too long now until we find out.

13 Those Hatches Must Mean Something (Unconfirmed)

via forbes.com

When Season 4 of Fortnite started, it included an unbreakable hatch near Wailing Woods. There is no explanation as to why it is there but there must be something to it. Perhaps this is the start of an underground network connecting to more hatches that appear in other places.

If such theory is true it could open up a new strategy of traversing through the map.

Although, this could lead to open corridor skirmishes where there won't be much room to hide. Perhaps these unbreakable hatches could lead to something far more complex hidden within Battle Royale's map.

12 Batman's Bat Cave In Fortnite?

via twitter.com (@staskygamezone)

There are many places that were added in season 4 of Fortnite that are pretty intriguing, thanks to a post on metabomb.net, you can find where some of these new areas are located. One of these places is a mansion right by Lonely Lodge. This looks like an ordinary, yet luxurious, mansion, except when you investigate inside, you'll notice an underground base with an exit on the side of the cliff. It strongly resembles the Wayne Manor and the Bat Cave from the Batman series. Whether this means that Batman could make a cameo appearance, or simply be an Easter Egg reference is a theory still to be determined, but it is a really good place to gather items.

11 Important Meeting Place?

via metabomb.net

If you go north of Wailing Woods and northeast of Tomato Town, you'll notice a strange assortment of chairs and a scarecrow placed out in the open in a patch of dirt. One of the chairs had a large teddy bear sitting upon it. Was this a meeting place of some sort? It is hard to say, it simply could just be an Easter Egg. But the area is worth checking out as sometimes you will find a golden treasure chest here.

10 How Did That Get There?

via Twitter.com (@staskygamezone)

Once Dusty Depot got destroyed by the meteor, thus turning into Dusty Divot, it was replaced with a mysterious research center that is studying parts of the impacting meteor. There are plenty of fragments that increase the player's jumping ability sprinkled throughout the impact crater. What may be the most mysterious object in the area could actually be a crashed ice cream truck that is embedded into the soil.

What makes this interesting is that the ice cream truck has a whopping 100,000 HP!

Surely there must be a reason to this, and for this truck to appear after the meteor impact? It very well could have some relation to what is going on in Dusty Divot.

9 The Emergence Of Omega

via hdqwalls.com

Fortnite updated with a few screens that detail more of the lore behind the game. There isn't any dialogue that explains some of these cinematic loading screens, but when you piece them together, you can get an understanding of what appears to be that the true villain has escaped from prison during the meteor strike. The villain is known as Omega through the skin that is unlocked with the battle pass in season 4. These screens (one of them is featured above) are theorized to detail the escape and creation of his own army and the battle against the heroes.

8 What Kind Of Base Is Near Snobby Shores?

via Twitter.com (@staskygamezone)

Most of Fortnite Battle Royale's locations can be your standard buildings, huts, and fancy homes, but in a mountain near Snobby Shores is a very interesting location that resembles a sinister secret base included in season 4. Fans speculated as to what kind of base it was and who it belonged to. But with the appearance of Omega and the cinematic screenshots, it is confirmed that the base likely belongs to him. A giant missile is docked at the top of the base suggesting that it could be used as an attack. Could we see this missile used in season 5?

7 Could There Be Dinosaurs In Fortnite?

via gamingeditorial.com

Between Snobby Shores and Greasy Grove lies a destroyed house that appears to be done in by a single giant footprint. The theory is that this could have been done by a dinosaur, which leads to speculation about Fortnite suddenly becoming the next Jurassic Park. After all, there already are a few dinosaur related skins in the game. What is unusual is that it only is a single footprint and right outside the house appears to be a camera, suggesting that this could simply be a movie set for a film.

6 Could Fortnite Just Be A Movie Production?

via newsweek.com

One of the cinematic loading screens of season 4 features what appears to be one of the protagonist character and Omega sitting down enjoying a cup of tea together at a movie production set. There is also another set near Moisty Mire.

This screen leads many to believe that the story of Fortnite Battle Royale is all just part of a film production, that there isn't any real conflict going on.

Notice the villain's hideout in the background, clearly, if there was a real conflict, they wouldn't have a movie set that close to the hideout. Could the entirety of Fortnite's gameplay all be part of a movie script with each battle being a scene recorded for a film?
