Epic has revealed that 15.3 million players logged into Fortnite to watch Galactus arrive on the island, eclipsing the game's previous record.

The curtain was brought down on what might have been Fortnite's most successful season to date this week. On Tuesday evening, after a season-long tease, supervillain Galactus arrived on the island with the intention of consuming it. During the accompanying live event, players logged into the game to team up and try and take down Galactus before he destroyed Fortnite as we know it.

Iron Man led the way, cloning Fortnite's battle bus billions of times and filling them all with explosives. Players were given the chance to pilot their very own battle bus and fly it up Galactus's arm and towards his mouth. The whole thing was very cool and reminiscent of the iconic Star Wars scene where Luke Skywalker is tasked with taking out the Death Star.

Much to his surprise, Galactus was defeated before he was at the zero point for too long, sending him back to wherever it is he came from. We're assuming that means he might one day return and need to be fought off again. Epic will certanly want to make that happen as the event set a new record for the game when it comes to its concurrent player count.

According to Epic, the live event peaked at 15.3 million concurrent players. That eclipses the record set by Travis Scott's first in-game concert which hit 12.3 million players. On top of that, there were also an additional 3.4 million people watching the event unfold live on Twitch and YouTube. Suffice to say, that record will take some beating, although that's what we said about Scott's record when it was set.

Epic has placed a cap on the number of players who can enter Fortnite's live events in the past to prevent any problems. That either wasn't the case this time around, or the limit placed on the player count was very high. Epic certainly has a tall order when it comes to matching the excitement generated by its Marvel season and the live event which brought it to an end. Season five has now begun, and we look forward to fidning out what it brings.
