The new guided missile in Fortnite is turning the game into the deadliest platformer that ever existed.

Well, maybe not, since most platformers are pretty deadly. And neither does it require the same sort of single-pixel precision needed in other platformers, like Mega Man. But it’s close.

The guided missile was added in the latest update to Fortnite. The weapon is, as described, a missile that you can remote control from afar and blow up people from long distances--the perfect thing when you’re pinned behind a tree and can’t poke your head out for fear of getting it blown off.

Now, however, gamers have discovered another, even greater use for the guided missile: you can ride them.

To be clear, rocket riding is nothing new in Fortnite. Players discovered that you could ride the tip of the rocket if you aimed it just right, allowing for some pretty impressive stunts. The downsides were you needed a teammate with a rocket launcher (and great aim), and you eventually died when the rocket either ran out of gas or blew up

But those problems are solved with the guided rocket. You don’t even need another player--you can just fly around all by yourself.

More than that, you can even keep flying. Much like modern anti-tank missiles, the guided rocket doesn’t arm immediately after firing. There’s a few moments after the rocket leaves the tube where you can hop aboard, ditching the old missile for the new one. This allows you to fly around the map until your supply of rockets runs out.

Of course, the dangers are obvious: miss your jump and you either plummet to your death or you blow up. But there’s huge playmaking potential here that will undoubtedly rock the current Fortnite meta to its core. Who knows? The game could eventually devolve (or evolve) into countless players flying around on rockets trying to snipe each other.
