A new leak has revealed the latest weapon to enter into Fortnite just might be a freeze trap.
Fortnite season 6.0 just recently launched, and with it came bytes upon bytes of data for data miners to get to the bottom of. While the patch notes provide us with tons of info on what to expect in the current season, such as pets, new skins, and invisibility-granting shadow cubes, what’s not in the patch notes can be even more revealing for those who know how to access encrypted code.
And since this is the internet, there are plenty of people who know how to do that.
We have Fortnite: Battle Royale Leaks on Twitter to thank for finding this juicy tidbit buried in the most recent patch. Found in one of the many lines of code is something called "Trap_Context_Freeze_Athena", which can be interpreted to mean some sort of freeze trap.
Our data mining friends have helpfully translated the numbers and underscores into real-world effects. Namely, the trap will inflict a small amount of ice damage on your foes and slow their movement for a certain amount of time.
Looks like Freeze Traps will be coming to the game!— Fortnite: Battle Royale Leaks 🎃 (@FNBRLeaks) September 28, 2018

Since this is very early code it would be inappropriate to say how much damage or how long the slow effect will last, but we’re going to say a massive amount of damage and a near-permanent slow.
That’s probably not correct. And if it is, it will probably be patched out later.
As this is a freeze trap, we’re thinking that it will likely arrive closer to the winter season and likely during a time when the Fortnite map will be covered in a blanket of white, frozen water crystals.
In other data mining news, it looks like the mysterious purple cube introduced in patch 5.0 is going to get bigger. Nobody knows just what is this cube’s deal, but we’re pretty sure it’s the reason for all the strange corrupted areas and why there’s an even stranger floating island above Loot Lake.
So, the cube is going to grow this season 👀 pic.twitter.com/LgbjWT27AL— Fortnite: Battle Royale Leaks 🎃 (@FNBRLeaks) September 28, 2018
We know that Fortnite is a weird game, but it looks like things are just going to get weirder from here on out.
