Party Royale is Fortnite's newest mode and has now been active for more than a week, but what is it exactly?

Ask a random pool of gamers what Fortnite is and most will reply with "a battle royale game." That is unequivocally Fortnite's main draw. However, Epic continues to demonstrate that it wants its creation to be so much more than that. Whether that be via crossover events, in-game concerts, or its Creative mode.

The latest addition to the Fortnite family is Party Royale. A separate island from which violence and building has been banned. There are no guns, no battles. In fact, aside from a few non-confrontational challenges attached to it should players wish to complete them, there is no competitive reason to be there at all. So what is it exactly and why does it exist?

It seems as if the new Party Royale island is a place where Fortnite players can spend time together. Instead of hunting each other down, they can take a stroll along the virtual coast. Play some soccer. Take in a movie. Head to the dance club together. There are a lot of things to do but as we said before, it is a far cry from the 100 players battling to be the last one standing over on the main island.

Judging by Epic's most recent announcement, it sounds as if this new smaller island will be where future concerts and non-battle royale events take place from now on. It makes sense as regular games are forced to come to a stop momentarily while they take place. Travis Scott's series of concerts, for instance. Players were unable to use weapons or hurt each other during the performances.

Thanks to Party Royale, that may no longer need to be the case going forward. Players who want to watch the concert or take part in the non-BR event, such as the upcoming Deadmau5 concert, can fire up Party Royale mode and do so. Meanwhile, players who would prefer to carry on as normal and continue to battle can do so too.
