Performance mode has been a welcome addition to Fortnite on PC. That was until console players discovered how it looks when using it in the storm.
Fortnite Chapter 2 has ushered in a lot of changes, most of which have been welcomed with open arms. That includes a new performance mode on the PC version of the game. Well, it did up until a few days ago. A comparison shot that has emerged on Reddit has revealed how different it looks inside Fortnite's storm when using performance mode versus what it looks like without it.
Whether you want to use a game's performance mode or not really depends on the kind of gamer you are. If you want to see everything a game's environment has to offer and you simply want to take it all in, performance mode will be of no interest to you. However, if you want to up a game's fps, it will be of the utmost importance to you.
Competitive Fortnite players are all about upping that fps. On top of that, it also appears to increase their visibility while stuck in the storm. This is no minor advantage either. As you can see in the comparison shots below courtesy of EzBugatti99, visibility in the storm without performance mode is almost non-existent. When performance mode is turned on, you can barely even tell the storm has descended at all.
All you can see when performance mode is turned off is the actual player. That means the chances of seeing a nearby enemy are almost zero. The odds of that enemy seeing you if they are using performance mode, on the other hand, are greatly increased. This revelation has understandably irked players, especially those using a console where performance mode isn't an option.
Someone from Epic has acknowledged the post on Reddit, but at the time of typing this nothing seems to have been done about it. Short of removing performance mode entirely, which would also go down like a lead balloon, it's unclear what the fix for this would be. Adding performance mode to console perhaps, so that the option is then in the hands of the players. If they want to stay away from performance mode and opt for a storm with near-zero visibility, that's on them.
