Rare Physical Copies Of Fortnite Are Selling For A Lot Of Money

Fortnite was originally sold as a physical release for 'Save The World' mode, but the Battle Royale is free to play. Now those copies are worth a ton.

Even though Fortnite is a game that you can download for free, it actually started life as a physical disc that you could buy from the store.

Fortnite is the battle royale based game that has taken the world by storm. The basis of the game might be simple but it has a couple of key ingredients that mean gamers have not been able to resist. The two most important ingredients? The fact that the game is free to download and equally as important, it is extremely addictive.

What you might not know is that the 100 player battle royale mode isn't the be all and end all of what is available to players on Fortnite. There's another mode but it is one that you have to pay to play. It's the player-versus-environment "Save The World" mode, and it was actually available long before we all started parachuting into the map as Fortnite began to take the world by storm.

An even lesser known fact about Fortnite and its PvE mode is that it was previously available as a physical disc that you could purchase in stores. The game was launched last July, two months before Epic introduced battle royale mode, and it cost $60. Only a very limited number of discs were ever created and they were released alongside a download of the game.

If you're one of the lucky few that bagged themselves a physical copy of Fortnite then we have some good news for you, courtesy of arstechnica.com. The rare discs are currently selling on Amazon and it would seem that some Fortnite fans are willing to pay through the nose for them. In fact, some copies have sold for up to $450. Not a bad return on a $60 purchase.

It may seem strange to some that people are willing to pay that much money for a game that you can download for free. Well, not the PvE mode - but you get what we mean. Fortnite is a fad that has taken the world by storm though, and as is often the case with fads people will do anything they can to get their hands on a little memorabilia. Right now those physical copies of Fortnite are just about the rarest thing going when it comes to the extremely popular game.
