Fortnite today received an update on Nintendo Switch, bringing increased GPU performance and a resolution boost for the popular battle royale. Whether playing in docked or handheld mode, you'll now benefit from a smoother playing experience, along with increased resolutions.

"Beginning March 30, 2021, we’re releasing an update to enhance our player experience for the Nintendo Switch," Epic Games announced. "Specifically, we’re upgrading the renderer on the Nintendo Switch to make better use of the console’s GPU."

The update should result in images that are "less blurry, without loss of performance." You'll also notice a gameplay experience that's generally more consistent, with fewer instances of frame rate drops.

Once you update your copy of Fortnite, here's what you can expect to see:

  • Handheld: 1170x660 resolution (Previously 1000x560)
  • Docked: 1560x880 resolution (Previously 1390x780)

Epic Games points out that handheld mode is improving its resolution by 38% – which should make the game much easier on the eyes.

The team also released before and after photos, highlighting the improvements brought about in the update. You can check out the images below:

As if the visual improvements weren't enough, the new update will save you an additional 140MB of storage space on Switch.

This isn't the first performance-related update rolled out for Fortnite, as last year saw a true "Performance Mode" arrive on PC. Instead of making the game look better, however, Performance Mode provides a frame rate boost by running graphics at a lower setting. Epic saw this as a way to bring Fortnite to underpowered PCs – and a new market of players.

The mode was initially well-received, although it's recently come to light that Performance Mode is giving players an unfair advantage, as several textures that typically obscure your line of sight aren't as intense when running in Performance Mode.

Seeing as the update on Switch simply enhances Fortnite's resolution, we doubt the community will find much to argue with. You can check out the improvements for yourself by jumping into a Fortnite match later today.
