The discovery by data miners of Second Chance Vans in Fortnite's code has all but confirmed the imminent arrival of the ability to respawn in the game.
You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain. The immortal words of Batman from the iconic movie The Dark Knight. In the increasingly popular world of Battle Royale gaming, Fortnite is currently the hero. However, the arrival of Apex Legends may indicate that Epic Games' contribution to the free-to-play arena may soon become the villain.
Apex Legends landed a little over a month ago and even though it bears a lot of similarities to Fortnite, some of its differences highlighted issues with Epic's heavyweight contender. For starters, the ping system used in Apex has been praised non-stop by its players. So much so that it took Epic less than a month to steal it an apply it to Fortnite.
The second big difference between the two games is Apex's respawn system. If you die in Apex, your game is not necessarily over. If one of your surviving teammates grabs your tag and takes it to a respawn point, you're back in the game. During a Reddit AMA prior to the launch of Fortnite Season 8, Epic hinted that it would be employing that idea too. Two weeks later, and its arrival appears to be imminent.
Data miners have discovered files labeled SC_Machine, reports Kotaku. Players have put two and two together and figured out that SC probably stands for Second Chance. Not only that, but the machine in question appears to be a van. The blue vehicle has a hologram of a person on top. Could this be where teammates will have to take Fortnite's equivalent of Apex tags to bring them back from elimination?
The answer to that is almost definitely yes. While there have been examples of data miner discoveries never coming to fruition, Epic has already confirmed that it has been discussing a respawn system. The only questions that still need to be answered are when will this system arrive and how long will it be around for? Will respawning be a permanent feature or just something that is part of one of Fortnite's Limited Time Modes?
