Fortnite's Shadow Stones Explained And The 7 Places You Can Find Them

Two of this week's Fortnite challenges involve shadow stones and the map's corrupted areas, but what's the deal with this creepy new consumable?

Fortnite season six is well and truly underway now with its theme, Darkness Rises, influencing the island in a major way. Season five ended with a giant cube leaving runes around the map and eventually descending into Loot Lake. That cube has lifted Loot Lake's island high up in the air, and the areas where it left its mark have become corrupted.

Those corrupted areas are the crux behind one of this week's Fortnite challenges. There are seven in total, which have been highlighted below courtesy of the Daily Express, and we have been tasked with paying a visit to all of them. If you have chalked off a couple of them already, you will have likely encountered a brand new Fortnite consumable, the shadow stone.

Another of week two's challenges is to consume a shadow stone in three different matches. That means you can kill two birds with one stone as you visit the corrupted areas. What exactly is the shadow stone doing to you upon consumption, though? It's not as simple as the apples which replenish health and the bright blue mushrooms that fill your shield.

When you consume a shadow stone, your Fortnite avatar will effectively turn into a shadow themselves. It has both pros and cons. If you stand completely still, you become invisible to your enemies, and even when you move you'll be pretty darn hard to hit. You can also pass through objects using the Phase ability, and you are immune to fall damage. However, you will not be able to access or use your weapons while in shadow form.

If you use a shadow stone to escape from an enemy you just can't shake then don't worry, you won't remain in shadow form for the rest of the round. The stone's effects only last 45 seconds, and if you want to break from it before then you can just use the button you'd use to look down your gun's sight. Get out there and use them wisely because if used right, you'll be the one doing the surprise drop-ins on your rivals.
