There have been rumors circulating over the past few months about a secret FromSoftware project that is being worked on by George R.R. Martin of A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones fame.

A new leak about the rumored game has come from 4Chan (via Game Rant), which means that all information should be treated as a rumor until verified by FromSoftware.

According to the leaker, the development title of the game is "Project Rune," which has previously been referred to as "Great Rune" in other leaks. The game will be a departure from the castles and medieval knights of Dark Souls, instead using a setting that is inspired by Norse mythology, which will include Frost Giants in its lore. Despite the change in setting, the game is intended to be a spiritual successor to the Dark Souls series, even though it will feature differences in its gameplay.

Project Rune is being made by two different directors - Yui Tanimura and Hidetaka Miyazaki. Tanimura co-directed Dark Souls II and is said to be the main creative force behind the game.

The leak claims that Project Rune will be an action RPG that is set in a dark fantasy world, which has been FormSoftware's bread and butter in the past. There will be three playable characters in Project Rune - an archer with a longbow, a warrior with a club and shield, and a wizard who casts spells using a magical book. The three character types will have their own unique enemies and locations that they can encounter during the story. Project Rune will also include a similar multiplayer format to the Dark Souls series, where players can be called on for aid or can invade the worlds of others.

The story of Project Rune will involve the player being a member of a fellowship of knights who are part of a kingdom that has been engaged in a civil war that has lasted over a century. The other knights all disappeared while searching for a magical artifact that can help them win the war. The leaker claims that the game is being developed using the Unreal Engine, that it will be published by Bandai Namco, and that a cinematic trailer will be shown during E3.

It bears mentioning again that all of the information above comes from a leak, so it has yet to be verified. We will know soon enough if the elusive Great Rune is real, as E3 is only a few weeks away.
