According to a new rumor, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin is working on a video game with FromSoftware.

Conan O’Brien once had a sketch on his show that depicted the humorous lengths that George R.R. Martin would go to in order to avoid writing The Winds of Winter, which is the upcoming sixth entry in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series that has been adapted into the Game of Thrones TV show. It seems that Conan and his writing staff might have underplayed Martin’s desire to escape from Westeros, as a new rumor suggests that he has been working on a video game with FromSoftware, the creators of Dark Souls.

The seemingly insane rumor concerning a George R.R. Martin and FromSoftware team-up comes from Liam Robertson and YouTuber Spawn Wave, who collaborated in order to learn more about the project.

According to the rumor, the unnamed George R.R. Martin/FromSoftware project is due to be published by Bandai Namco and will be an open-world title. The player will be able to choose their starting position and will have free reign to travel anywhere. The game world will be broken up into kingdoms that the player can choose to visit in any order, and each of them will be ruled by a specific monarch or other high-ranking officials who will act as boss monsters. Defeating these rulers will grant the player new abilities in a similar manner to the Mega Man series.

The rumor also revealed that the lead writer on the game is George R.R. Martin and he will be responsible for the creation of the game world. Those who are less familiar with Martin might seem surprised that he is taking on another project when he is working on the next A Song of Ice and Fire novel, but putting the famous series aside to work on other projects is very much in-character for him.

FromSoftware has just released the highly-acclaimed Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and there is a lot of speculation over what it will release next. There was a VR game released by FromSoftware called Déraciné that included some subtle hints that a sequel to Bloodborne was being worked on, while Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has made comments about wanting to work on a game in the battle royale genre.

Fans of A Song of Ice and Fire who are impatiently waiting for The Winds of Winter might be frustrated by these rumors of George R.R. Martin working on a video game, but a collaboration between him and FromSoftware could make for an incredible fantasy gaming experience, especially when you consider the pedigree of the talent involved in the project.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is available for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One now. Hopefully, we'll find out more details about FromSoftware's newest project soon.
