As far back as the 18th century, suits and tuxedos have been a sign of luxury, class, and impeccable style. No unnecessary frills or accents, just pure color painting its wearer in striking, stylish silhouettes. Anyone can wear a suit, and just about anyone can look good in a suit — at least with the help of a good tailor.

But the real sign of suit-based style is when you can rock one in a stressful situation. Whether you're in the midst of a high-tension argument or engaged in a straight-up fistfight, if you can wear a suit and keep it looking good the whole time, you send those around you a very particular message: "I've got style for days, and there's nothing you can do to stop that." The characters who send that message are not ones to be trifled with.

10 Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney Series

Phoenix Wright points in the court room in the Ace Attorney Trilogy.

It's been said that you can judge the quality of a lawyer by how expensive their suit is. Considering the size of Phoenix Wright's office in the Ace Attorney games, it's probably a safe bet that he didn't have a lot of money to blow on name-brand suits even before his temporary disbarment.

If his signature blue suit and bright red tie are knock-offs, though, you'd never know. Since the very first time he wore it, Wright has always cut a heroic silhouette in that suit, with the deep blue color perfectly punctuating his dramatic points and shouts. It's probably one of his only suits, so he must take very good care of it.

9 Valkenhayn R. Hellsing - BlazBlue Series

Valkenhayn from BlazBlue

In the BlazBlue series, Valkenhayn is the dedicated butler and advisor of the Alucard family. He serves its current head, Rachel Alucard, with all the nobility and wisdom befitting his station. Valkenhayn always dresses impeccably in a dark, aquamarine suit with gold trim, punctuated with a large ribbon bow tie.

Despite his elderly age his style never slips, which is doubly impressive when he gets into a scrape. Not only does his surprisingly heavy and brutal fighting style not damage his suit at all, but when he transforms into a lycanthropic wolf form, he still maintains his exquisitely coiffed hair. Or fur, rather.

8 Garcian Smith - Killer7

Garcian Smith in Killer7

While a handful of the members of the Killer7 wear suits, Garcian's suit has a little more flair to it. It's pure white, top to bottom, paired with a striking bright yellow tie. It's a bit ostentatious for an assassin, but fitting for his role as the Syndicate's second-in-command.

What's really impressive about this suit, though, is the fact that it's almost always spotless. Garcian's secondary role, after all, is the Syndicate's cleaner, removing the evidence of their kills and retrieving the half-dead heads of his fellow personas when they're killed. Despite how much he handles human gore, not even a drop of it gets anywhere near that bright white suit.

7 Henry Cooldown - No More Heroes Series

The character Henry Cooldown brandishes his weapon in No More Heroes 3

Even in his first appearance in the first No More Heroes game, Henry Cooldown had his style down to a science. With a gray, weathered longcoat covering a posh gray suit, complete with vest and tie, Henry presented an image of a nobleman, wielding his Cross Sword beam katana with knight-like grace.

Even in No More Heroes 3, when Henry's personality underwent a sudden, violent shift (complete with him inexplicably losing his accent), he still didn't let that style slip. While they may have clashed somewhat with his strange goggles and slicked-back hair, he still kept that coat and suit in immaculate condition.

6 Joker - Persona 5

Joker awakening in Persona 5

At several points in Persona 5's story, Morgana explains that the outfits the Phantom Thieves wear in the Metaverse are based on their personal images of a rebel. Ann's is reminiscent of a female villain she saw on TV once, Ryuji looks like an old-school punk biker, and so on.

It's fitting, then, as the founder of the Phantom Thieves, that Joker would be dressed in an impeccable black dress suit, complete with a vest, longcoat, and even a pocket kerchief for that extra dose of pizazz. Since the early days of the concept of gentleman thieves, popularized by the likes of Raffles and Arsene Lupin, it's been a rule that they must dress impeccably. Joker has that rule down.

5 Steven Stone - Pokemon Omega Ruby And Alpha Sapphire

Steven Stone in the Pokemon anime

Every Pokemon League champion has their own distinctive style. Some, like Blue and Alder, keep it comfy and casual, while others, like Iris and Leon, go for more ostentatious looks. Out of all the champions, though, one who found a perfect balance between those two styles was the inimitable champion of the Hoenn region, Steven Stone.

Every aspect of his suit is subtle, yet absolutely unmistakably Steven Stone. From the wavy pattern on his jacket to his large, flowing cravat, from his metal-rimmed cuffs to the small, yet poignant sight of his Mega Stone pin, Steven Stone is a man with more style than he knows what to do with.

4 Urien - Street Fighter Series

Urien in Street Fighter 5

Considering how often he runs around in his undies, flicking Aegis Reflectors at people, it's easy to forget that Street Fighter's Urien is the President of a secret society bent on global conquest. Back in Street Fighter 3, he would show up in a suit at the start of a fight, but quickly tear it off in favor of the aforementioned undies.

Thankfully, in Street Fighter 5, while there was still some occasional clothes-shredding, he started fighting properly clothed, and what a set of clothes they were. Urien's usual suit is grey and white pinstripe, with a maroon undershirt beneath. Naturally, the front is popped open to put his fantastic pecs on full display.

3 The Spy - Team Fortress 2

The Spy holding the Sniper in Team Fortress 2's Meet the Spy

It's one thing to walk around in a suit when there's a hint of danger in the air, or in a one-on-one fist fight. It's a different matter to wear one in the middle of an active battlefield. Of course, if the Spy of Team Fortress 2 wasn't good enough at his job to wear that suit with confidence, he probably would've died a long time ago.

From his blue (or red) pinstripe suit to his white undershirt and softly-colored tie, the Spy wouldn't look out of place on a busy city street. It's only thanks to his signature balaclava and butterfly knife that the Spy can be identified, usually right before he plants said knife in the soft part of your back.

2 Goro Majima - Yakuza Series

yakuza 0 majima in suit

While most of the thugs in the Yakuza series wear suits, Majima is actually a rare exception. Rather than a regular suit and tie, he usually walks around in a snakeskin coat with the front wide open. Not exactly appropriate for polite company. So why is he on this list? One word: dichotomy. Thanks to his stint as Sotenbori's "Lord of the Night" in the 80s, Majima actually cleans up fantastically.

During his time as the Cabaret Grand's legendary manager, he would always be dressed in an expertly-maintained black suit, white shirt, and bow tie. Even in the present, such as when he's called upon to judge the Cabaret Grand Prix in Yakuza Kiwami 2, he can still bust out that same perfect look.

1 Mario - Super Mario Odyssey

Mario in a white suit in Super Mario Odyssey

As Nintendo's mascot, Mario is no stranger to black-tie events. Even as far back as Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES he was wearing black showman suits, complete with a spiffy black top hat. That suit, as well as others like the red ones worn by Pauline's band, made a return in Super Mario Odyssey. However, out of all the outfits Mario wore in that game, few were as striking as the bright white suit Mario wore on the moon to confront Bowser.

The whole outfit, from the shoes to the gloves to the top hat (thanks to Cappy) is an immaculate, shining white, punctuated only by the accents of Mario's red bow tie and black mustache. To think a humble plumber could have such excellent style.
