There's a very particular art to cursing. Anyone can just drop an F-bomb every other word, but that's no fun. A real curse master knows the best curses to deliver at just the right moment, and the best way to go about delivering them. A single, properly-timed curse can be the most entertaining thing in the world, provided you're not opposed to that kind of thing.

Throughout video game history, there has been no shortage of foul-mouthed folks. Some simply enjoy cursing, using it as a part of their regular lexicon for fun, while others curse so much that they've genuinely stopped noticing that they do it.

10 Detective Isaac Washington - The House Of The Dead: Overkill

Isaac Washington and G in The House of the Dead: Overkill

Here's a fun fact: The House of the Dead: Overkill features approximately 202 uses of curse words throughout its entire script. The vast majority of those curses come from the game's deuteragonist, Detective Isaac Washington, alone, setting an actual world record at the time.

Isaac drops F-bombs at the same rate most people pause for breath in a sentence and regularly threatens to rip off his enemies' private bits. He refers to his partner, G, as a "mother f-er" more than he uses his actual name - though as G notes at the end of the story, he never referred to Warden Clement Darling, a literal mother f-er, by the term, ironically enough.

9 Mr. Torgue - Borderlands Series

Mr. Torgue in Borderlands

Mr. Torgue never does anything halfway. As a diehard enthusiast of all things explosive, dangerous, and eye-burstingly manly, he's got quite a mouth on him. In fact, he's so prone to cursing that the corporate board of the Torgue company made him get a digital censor surgically attached to his vocal cords. The censorship bleeps that sound whenever he curses aren't a game medium thing, he's actually making those noises.

Despite how much he curses and how loudly he does so, though, Mr. Torgue is actually a very pleasant person. To him, screaming and cursing are the same things as a normal indoor speaking voice, and he'll use them to tell you how much he treasures spending time with his friends and family. Loudly.

8 Brok - God Of War (2018)

Brok and Sindri from God of War 2018

Brok is one of the best blacksmiths in all of Midgard, having crafted both the Leviathan Axe and Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, alongside his brother, Sindri. He's also one of the crassest individuals in Midgard, and considering he shares a zip code with the likes of Baldur, that's saying something.

Brok casually drops F-bombs in both quiet and intense moments, and he has an entire repertoire of... colorful metaphors and exclamations for any given situation, almost all of which contain a reference to the gods' nether regions. Based on some of Brok's incidental dialogue, apparently, those colorful references all stem from his various escapades across the Nine Realms.

7 Zed - Lollipop Chainsaw

Zed in Lollipop Chainsaw

As the Dark Purveyor representing the genre of punk rock, Zed isn't shy about screaming curses at the top of his lungs whenever the interest strikes him. In fact, cursing is so central to Zed's identity, that it actually forms the bedrock of his fighting style.

Zed can channel dark energy into his voice, manifesting his screaming profanity as magical projectiles. As he screams less-than-polite words at Juliet, the words appear in front of him and launch outward in a wall of wailing madness. The first time Juliet bisects his head with her chainsaw, he describes how much he actually enjoyed it (albeit in a much less polite manner).

6 Kainé - NieR Replicant

Kaine in NieR Replicant

Kainé was ostracized by the people of the local village from a young age, which caused her to adopt a coarse, self-reliant attitude. This was compounded by a tendency toward casual swearing inherited from her grandmother, as well as the constant whispers of the Shade, Tyrann, who possesses the left side of her body.

All of these factors together have given Kainé a predilection for cursing, particularly F-bombs, "goddamns," and general references to private parts. While it took some getting used to, though, Nier and Emil gradually came to find Kainé's cursing to be an endearing character trait.

5 Travis Touchdown - No More Heroes Series

Travis Touchdown holding his beam katana in No More Heroes 3

Travis is a generally crass person, to put it politely. He's a massive pervert and an unapologetic murderer, and he doesn't much care who knows about either. As such, both in cutscenes and in regular gameplay, he throws out no shortage of lovely language including, of course, F-bombs aplenty.

You can generally gauge Travis's mood based on how much he curses. When he's cursing a lot, he's either furious or really excited. Inversely, when he stops cursing completely, he's much more somber and serious. Obviously, the latter doesn't happen much.

4 General Victor Sarrano - Bulletstorm

General Sarrano in Bulletstorm

To call General Sarrano a morally-bankrupt individual would be the understatement of the century. As a big fan of the life and times of Julius Caesar, Sarrano's dream is to place the entire galaxy under martial law, with him at the helm. Based on his affinity for the military, he fashions himself like a stereotypical drill sergeant, complete with a colorful repertoire of curses and insults.

Just about every sentence out of Sarrano's mouth includes at least one of the following: a typical curse word, a reference to guns or heavy ordinance, and at least one allusion to sexual intercourse or genitalia. It's almost impressive how he manages to stay so consistently crass in just about any situation.

3 Krunk - Metal Arms: Glitch In The System

Render of Krunk from Metal Arms: Glitch in the System

Krunk is probably the oldest droid in the entire resistance movement, and when you combine that with the fact that he's probably their only halfway-competent mechanic, it goes without saying he's got a lot on his plate. It's for this reason that he's almost perpetually disgruntled, which manifests itself as copious cursing.

The very first thing Glitch hears when he's first repaired and reactivated is Krunk swearing up a storm. Out of the first four sentences Krunk utters in the game, three of them have F-bombs in them, each punctuated by an automatic censorship bleep.

2 Cid Highwind - Final Fantasy 7

Original Final Fantasy 7 Cid lighting dynamite with a cigarette

Knowledge is a burden, and no one understands that like Cid. He is undoubtedly one of the smartest men in the entire world, but being beholden to men like Palmer proves endlessly frustrating. It's for this reason that Cid has a generally short fuse, and when that fuse runs out, he tends to start cursing out whoever happens to be nearby.

Amusingly, in the original Final Fantasy 7, Cid's curses would appear in his text boxes as a nondescript jumble of text characters. While there was no way to see exactly what he was seeing, you could make an educated guess based on the context.

1 The Conductor - A Hat In Time

Cursing, generally speaking, does not transcend cultural barriers. This is why, when Hat Kid first meets the Conductor at Dead Bird Studios, she doesn't realize just how filthy his mouth is when he goes around calling everyone a "peck-neck." Through Hat Kid, this sounds like gibberish to us, but for birds, that's actually a pretty nasty thing to call someone.

DJ Grooves later explains that the Conductor has a bit of an antiquated attitude in regard to film production standards, and doesn't mind cursing everyone out on set at the slightest provocation. Everyone tolerates it because his movies are pretty good.
