Game of Thrones aired its contentious finale all the way back in May, but that doesn't mean people are over it. The memes are going strong, and some media outlets are still covering the various mistakes made by the showrunners. The sad truth is that fans will never get the elaborate, full-length final season they deserve. There's also a strange lack of official Game of Thrones video games to fill the void. Enter Asmodee with digital version of the official Game of Thrones board game.

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game has existed as a tabletop game for a while. As one might imagine, it's a very involved strategy game where the goal is to take the Iron Throne. Players take command of one the great houses of Westeros. They raise armies and move them around the map of Westeros, hoping to dominate through force. Or they can use careful diplomacy. The game encourages player alliances and subsequent backstabbing. Fans and newcomers will be able to take their squabbles online when the game comes to PC in 2020.

Asmodee plans to make the experience well worth the digital purchase. The visuals will be upgraded, taking away the board and meeples for animated battles featuring 3D soldiers. The digital format will also allow for AI players so that you don't have to wait for friends. AI players also creates the option for an actual story campaign, which Asmodee is doing. The campaign will follow the events of the Song of Ice and Fire books (and hopefully include the real ending).

Those new to the game will benefit from the tutorial campaign. More experienced players will enjoy the online multiplayer. Asmodee also promises "specific social tools allowing for easy & efficient player interaction." Although most players will probably stick to Discord. For the most competitive, there will be an online leaderboard.

It's no secret that the Game of Thrones show ending was less than ideal for many fans. While HBO probably won't re-do the ending, at least we have Asmodee to provide us a way to make our own story. Finally, the dream of a Stark reunion and conquest of Westeros is within our grasp.

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game digital edition is scheduled for a PC-only release in 2020.
