House of the Dragon is coming to HBO Max later this summer, and now we’re getting our first good look at what the expect from the Game of Thrones prequel. The first teaser trailer just dropped online, introducing us to the main characters and the political machinations that eventually lead to a civil war.

It all starts with the three lords, Corlys Velaryon, Riockard Stark, Boremund Baratheon, all swearing allegiance to King Viserys Targaryen, who sits on The Iron Throne. King Viserys names his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen as his heir, but the naming of a female heir doesn’t seem to go down well with the rival lords.

"Men would sooner put the realm to the torch than see a woman ascend The Iron Throne,” notes an elder Targaryen in the trailer (possibly Halaena Targaryen), which summarizes the coming conflict quite nicely.

The plot of House of the Dragon is largely based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, and more specifically the “Dying of the Dragons” chapter. This text focuses on the great civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, fought between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-brother Aegon. Both sides employ dragons in their arsenal, so expect there to be some incredible battles in House of the Dragon.

House of the Dragon arrives on HBO Max on August 21. Emma D'Arcy plays Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, while Matt Smith plays her husband, Daemon Targaryen. Steve Tousssaint plays Lord Corlys Velaryon, Olivia Cooke is Alicent Hightower, and Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower.
