Its been a little over twenty years since Nintendo first released the Gameboy Color to the masses and now, in celebration, Nintendo New York is releasing a limited-time digital wristwatch inspired by the iconic handheld.

When it comes to handhelds, there is perhaps no company on the planet who has had as much worldwide success as Nintendo. When the company first released the Gameboy Color in October of 1998 it didn't take long for the revolutionary handheld to make its mark as the combined sales of it and the original Gameboy would total just over 118.69 million. The Gameboy Color would be discontinued in 2003 and is currently ranked as the third best selling system of all time behind both the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS respectfully. Given its lasting mark on the gaming industry, it comes as little surprise that Nintendo New York has decided to release a wristwatch inspired by its design.

Given the immense popularity of the handheld to this very day, it's a smart move by Nintendo to release such a wristwatch. Granted, many might see it as a gimmick, but the market will ultimately determine if such items are still desirable. If the watch sells well it could lead the company to release similar watches in the future and perhaps even offer a smartwatch option down the road.

According to Nintendo NY's official twitter account, consumers who wish to pick up the wristwatch can do so for a limited time at their New York location. While the company doesn't release any specifics, other websites that are selling the watch indicate that it's a standard digital watch that tells both the date and time. Additionally, consumers will be able to set each element of the watch using the buttons on the Gameboy itself. The watch won't be able to play any games and is currently only available in turquoise for $24.99.

This release seems to indicate that Nintendo is confident that its consumers will flock to purchase the item, despite it being a simple standard digital watch. It's strange that the company has decided to stick with turquoise only, but this is understandable given that the cost of tooling would go up considerably if they offered it in a variety of colors.

While the watch certainly isn't anything special, it could be an indication of where the company wants to go with its technology going forward. Even though it can't play games, the demand for such a device might lead the company to create a wristwatch that plays some of the best Gameboy games in the future.
