Nintendo's GameCube might not have gone down in history as the best-selling console of all time, or even one of the most innovative. It continues to have a special place in the hearts of many for a number of reasons though, and one of those reasons is its backwards compatibility. Not with the N64 and the SNES, but with the Game Boy.
In case you didn't know and missed out on what might have been one of Nintendo's best ideas up until that point in its history, the GameCube had an adaptor. The suitably named Game Boy Player could be fixed to the bottom of the console and afforded players the opportunity to experience Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games on a full-sized TV screen as opposed to their handheld consoles.
There was one, pretty big issue with the Game Boy Player. Nintendo added a filter to prevent the image from strobing, making it dark and blurred, and that's probably why it wasn't a bigger deal. However, 20 years later, as highlighted by Nintendo Life, someone has figured out a pretty simple way to make Game Boy games look a lot better when playing them through the GameCube's adaptor.
It's called the Game Boy Interface, and as you can see in the video above put together by Jon Cartwright of Good Vibes Gaming, it drastically improves the previously underwhelming image. The video also details how you can use the GBI yourself for not much money at all. Although it seems like there are a lot of steps involved, it's really a more simple process than it looks. Definitely worth doing if you have a GameCube and a bunch of old Game Boy cartridges just lying around.
Not to mention, for the time being at least, this is easily the best way to play Game Boy games on a bigger screen. There have been rumors Nintendo will add a Game Boy library to NSO for well over a year, but that still hasn't happened. Considering the issues Nintendo has had with its N64 library, there's no guarantee the games will look as good as they do above once available through the Switch either.
