In the modern age of video games, it seems that every year, there are a handful of games set to take the industry by storm. Some of these are brand new franchises trying to find and captivate an audience, but most of them are sequels or spinoffs of beloved and established properties that fans are yearning to hop back into. Though we're still near the middle of 2019, thanks to E3 2019 we have dates for several games slated for 2020.
Let's take a look at the 10 best games confirmed for 2020. Remember, we're only looking at those confirmed to release next year.
10 Gods & Monsters
Critics and fans alike are having a tough time setting their expectations correctly for the next open-world franchise from Ubisoft. Gods & Monsters is a brand new game lead by developers behind the latest Assassin's Creed releases and is looking to deliver a more family-friendly experience in both aesthetic and themes.
At E3 2019, Ubisoft showed a brief glimpse at the world and the character players would be taking control of in this mythology-based world of gods and monsters. Gods & Monsters is marked with an early 2020 release so look for more at The Game Awards in December, or at PSX if it returns.
9 Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Unfortunately for Lego, their reveal of a new collection of Star Wars games in the Lego universe wasn't met with the applause they assumed it would. On the heels of two lackluster EA releases, and on the precipice of their first possible hit with the Star Wars license, fans are scratching for brand new games.
Well, it turns out that the Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga game is more than a port or remaster and is a whole new collection of all 9 films in the Skywalker Saga. It has a loose date of 2020 so look for it to likely be a cross-generation title for both PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett.
8 Dying Light 2
Dying Light 2 was revealed at the E3 2018 Xbox Briefing and came as a neat surprise for fans of the breakout hit that was Dying Light. The first game earned a lot more attention as a well-made game because it releases in the early months of the year which used to be a time for game backlogs to be sifted through.
In 2019, things have changed and publishers are taking advantage of the full calendar more than ever. Dying Light 2 is set for a Spring 2020 release and will be trying to find a slot in the crowded pre-next generation that is the first half of 2020.
7 Ori & The Will Of The Wisps
Many people anticipated that the sequel to the award-winning Ori and the Blind Forest would be released by the end of 2019. The game has been in development for quite some time, but a small team working on such a beautifully ambitious experience makes it a hard one to project in terms of completion. Ori and the Will of the Wisps will be releasing in February of 2020 which is a great beginning to an already packed year.
If the original game is any indication for the type of experience you'll have in the sequel than the sky's the limit. Make way for another heartbreaking adventure.
6 Watch Dogs: Legion
Watch Dogs is a franchise that, when revealed, had fans losing their minds at the possibility of hacking an entire city in hope of solving mysterious and catching criminals. The first game had plenty of issues, but Watch Dogs 2 followed-up the lackluster premiere with a neat experience in the streets of San Francisco.
Watch Dogs: Legion will allow players to build a secret team of individuals focused on taking back London from their technological oppressors. The gameplay demo showcased just how ambitious it's trying to be when it releases in March 2020.
5 Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing was considered one of the few beloved Nintendo franchises that still hadn't made its way onto the Nintendo Switch. In late 2018 fans were treated with the confirmation that a new entry was currently in development for the Nintendo Switch and to expect it in 2019. Sadly the game was delayed, but at E3 2019 Nintendo revealed Animal Crossing: New Horizons with a brand new release date of March 2020.
The new additions of crafting and half-block item movement have fans dreaming for 2020 to get here as soon as possible.
4 Halo: Infinite
The launch of a brand new console generation is a pretty big deal considering they only come around every 7+ years or so. At E3 2019 Head of Xbox Phil Spencer announced that Project Scarlett would be launching in Holiday 2020 and confirmed suspicions that Halo: Infinite would be a launch title for the platform.
All that's known so far is that the game is running on a new engine titled Slipspace and the budget is estimated to be around $500 million. The cinematic story trailer unveiled at E3 2019 sets the stage for a gameplay blowout at Xbox's E3 Briefing in 2020.
3 Marvel's Avengers
Marvel's Avengers currently sits in a tough place. The cinematic reveal accompanied by the introduction of the star-studded voice cast was pretty solid in its own right. The big issue for everyone was the lack of extended gameplay presented outside of the behind closed doors demo.
Crystal Dynamics has stated that there will be plenty more revealed about the game before its May 2020 release, so fans should stay tuned. With every addition hero being added for free, and no random loot boxes, the game has the potential to take the gaming industry by storm.
2 Final Fantasy 7 Remake
With the release of Kingdom Hearts 3 in 2019 and Final Fantasy VII Remake set to release in March of 2020 it seems like Square Enix is finally delivering on long-awaited projects. PlayStation's most recent State of Play presentation set the stage for Final Fantasy VII Remake to make a big impression at E3 2019.
During Square Enix's presentation for the game, they showcased the brand-new gameplay mechanics and revealed the modern updated look of Tifa. With the gameplay exceeding fan expectations, and the game focusing on Midgar, 2020 might be the best year yet for the Final Fantasy franchise.
1 Cyberpunk 2077
Developed by CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2077 is the upcoming first-person role-playing game that's looking to set the gold standard for the genre in the same way The Witcher 3 did in 2015. During the Xbox E3 2019 Briefing, Keanu Reeves was revealed as Johnny Silverhand, the player's AI companion throughout their journey in the game.
Gameplay demos behind closed doors have set the stage for it to be a major contender for Game of the Year in 2020. Cyberpunk 2077 will be releasing on April 16th, 2020 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
