Video games are great at making people feel powerful and even invincible at times. There are plenty of games that throw some wicked enemies at you and expect you to come out on top. From hordes of hungry zombies in Resident Evil, to killer robots in Horizon Zero Dawn, games can really get your blood pumping.

But, what about those games that take that feeling to the max? There are plenty of games that let you play as a god. Games where you control legions of fighters or that let you create and destroy cities with a click of a button. But what about the ones that let you fight a god? What bigger thrill in a fight can you have than fighting someone who may be immortal? These are some of the games that take that feeling to new heights.

9 Smite

One of the most popular MOBA games to date, they don't call it "the battlefield of the gods" for nothing. Smite puts you in an arena filled with not just everyday gladiators but with gods from various pantheons.

From Jormungandr of Norse myth, to Cthulhu of Lovecraftian fiction, there is a wide array of gods to fight as and fight against. With each god having their own unique skills, it may take some time to figure out what your preferred class or even preferred god is, but once that's sorted out you'll be killing other deities and adding to that kill tally in no time.

8 Bayonetta

Bayonetta is definitely an odd game, what with weapons made of hair and all. But, the enemies in this game are no joke. The game gets progressively harder until finally, Bayonetta has to face any enemy seemingly at a far stronger level than herself. Jubileus The Creator.

Jubileus, didn't get the title of ruler of Paradiso for nothing. With a variety of ranged attacks, using her own golden hair, and a variety of elemental attacks as well, it takes all of Bayonetta's own skills to fight off and finally defeat Jubileus and bind her soul to the sun. An epic ending to an epic fight.

7 Skyrim

An RPG crowd favorite, and for good reason. There are a lot of enemies in Skyrim that will have you balancing shouts, swords, and sweet rolls just to stay alive. The main storyline's final boss Alduin is one such fight.

A fight that was destined to happen from the prologue of the game, the fight against Alduin the "world eater" is a tale for the ages. Far away from the frozen shores of Skyrim proper, the final battle takes place in the plane of Sovngarde, where Nordic warriors lay to rest. It doesn't take long to figure out why the dragon cult you have seen resurrected in old barrows have revered Alduin for so long. In the end, the Dovahkiin triumphs and you save Skyrim. Not to mention you get to absorb the soul of Alduin himself.

6 Asura's Wrath

Playing as a demigod helps bridge the gap between power levels when your goal is defeating a god. Thankfully Asura is just that so you stand a chance against the formidable enemies in Asura's Wrath.

As you go on your quest for vengeance, punching holes in various enemies as you go, at some point you have to face Chakravartin. As the god of Mantra, facing off against him is something that is sure to be a challenge, even for Asura. In the last leg of the fight though you use your tremendous strength to deal a heavy blow to the god's face, cracking its exterior and finally defeating him.

5 Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

An epic tale of overcoming trauma and psychosis, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice sees Senua grow from a nervous and disheveled survivor to a warrior that fights the gods themselves.

Each of the bosses of the game is a god of a various realm. From a fire-wielding mad man to the deformed creature that is Fenrir, each boss fight is a lesson in quick responses and lever strategy. With every victory though, the character sees Senua triumph over her own doubt and fight back against the dark rot that seeks to claim her.

4 Final Fantasy

Seemingly a cornerstone of JRPG's, fighting a god is something that makes the genre so outrageously fun and this series holds the crown for the genre's god-killing trope.

There are quite a few instances where the team of adventurers you control has risen up the ranks and has to face a god or even godlike entity in their final battle. From the aptly named Creator all the way to the egotistical Sephiroth, with the right amount of teamwork you can defeat deities and save the world time and again.

3 Elden Ring

The culmination of writing by George R. R. Martin and directing of Hidetaka Miyazaki, Elden Ring was sure to have some impressive moments. But no one was really prepared for just how much of an understatement that would be.

While technically an optional fight, Rykard the Lord of Blasphemy is a fight well worth experiencing. His body combined with the God-Devouring Serpent is something that definitely makes you second guess your decision. Although, hopefully by now you have some other bosses under your belt. As he pulls a sword directly from his mouth, there is a certain sense of doubt as you begin the combat in earnest. If you are quick on your feet and heavy-handed, you can earn yourself the title of god-slayer.

2 Mortal Kombat

There have been a lot of brutal fights in the Mortal Kombat series. A game whose roster has grown to include undead ninjas, lizard people, and... Rambo; there are some definite heavy hitters. Though some forget that one of the characters from the original roster has god status.

Raiden, Earthrealm's protector and wielder of all things lightning, has entered the mortal kombat tournament more than once in his fighting career. Wise and stern as he is, he can definitely pack a punch with his various lightning-fueled abilities. That hasn't dissuaded plenty of other kombatants from testing their might against him throughout the years. Some to great success.

1 God of War

As a title that made itself a name as the god killing game, the God of War series for sure has to be number one on this list.

Kratos' journey of revenge has been painted with the blood of fellow gods. Starting early by claiming the title of god of war by killing Aries, the person he thought was responsible for the murder of his family, his reign of destruction only continued to the rest of the Greek pantheon as he learned of Zeus' betrayal. Now, pensive as he is, he still can't escape the attention of other gods and has turned to spilling the blood of those from other pantheons.
