While no official reason was given for Uyama’s departure, the split appears amicable. In fact, the organization states that while they are sad to see Uyama go, they remain dedicated to the work he started 13 years ago in his mother’s basement. Similarly, Uyama is proud to have watched the company grow from a “small volunteer effort” to the “thriving organization” it is today. He also acknowledged Merkle’s role in that growth, giving his predecessor a nod of approval.

Speaking of Merkle, the incoming Managing Director shared how honored he feels stepping into Uyama’s role. He promises to do everything he can to “build upon the foundation [Uyama] built” and hopefully lead GDQ to newer heights. He will begin that journey after next week's Awesome Games Done Quick Online 2023 where all proceeds go to support the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
