Despite its storied history spanning many years, the Assassin’s Creed games always feel like something fresh and new for us. Due to the series’ unique style, the developers have brought distinct experiences with imaginative backdrops that blend history, mythology, conspiracy, and sci-fi.

8 Things That Make No Sense In Assassin's Creed Mirage
Nope, these aren't a mirage! Some things in Basim's journey in Assassin's Creed Mirage don't make a shred of sense.

However, it's hard to imagine that this brand of action-adventure/open-world platform games doesn't expand beyond the franchise. In fact, in the eyes of many gamers, there are several games out there on par with, if not better, than the Assassin’s Creed series. In this list, we’ve compiled those entries that make use of elements the Assassin’s Creed games have mastered, as well as those that can bring you additional value, such as the story or gameplay. So, for you to expand your gaming library, here are games like Assassin’s Creed.

Updated October 12th 2023, by Gary Kay: The experience you can get from playing an Assassin's Creed game is unmatched, but this doesn't mean that there aren't any games that can be compared to the long-running series. While there are consistent elements to the series, it has become synonymous with reinvention in recent years, with every new entry in the series adding a new design choice or theme to keep it fresh.

With the series featuring such strong variety, this also means that there are plenty of games that can be easily recommended if you like a certain type of Assassin's Creed game. So, fresh off the release of Mirage, what are the best games to play if you want something similar to Assassin's Creed.

One of the strongest aspects of Assassin's Creed is the wide variety of unique weapons you can learn to master throughout the series, this aspect is perfectly matched in the wide variety of weapon choices you get in Lies of P.

The game is a lot more linear, but a lot more challenging than an Assassin's Creed game, but its dedication to interesting combat, and a richly detailed world makes it the perfect game to try out if you want something like Assassin's Creed, but not exactly the same.

The steampunk setting means that Lies of P can be easily compared to Assassin's Creed Syndicate, so if you are a fan of that entry in the series, then Lies of P could satiate the lack of any further Assassin's Creed games in the same style of Syndicate.

While the success of the Saints Row series unfortunately petered out after its last few years, however, the open world exploration featured in the later entries is still incredibly enjoyable. Unlike the more grounded approach to exploration featured in most Assassin's Creed title (excluding Animus influences), the Saints Row games only got more out-there with the options they lend players.

The main reason why Saints Row 4 is such a strong recommendation for fans of the Assassin's Creed series is how similar the style of open-world exploration is to Assassin's Creed games from the mid-2010s. The way games interact with an open-world setting has changed over time, but if you want a game that captures the same style of exploration from that era, then this Saints Row entry in particular is worth checking out.

The game is a lot shorter than most Assassin's Creed games, making it a perfect refreshing break if you are looking for something new to try out.

Two series that fans would not expect to be compared often would be Assassin's Creed and Final Fantasy, and, for most entries in the classic fantasy series, this would be true. However, with Final Fantasy 16, the medieval aesthetic is similar to a lot of the earlier entries in the Assassin's Creed series, only this time with polished new-generation graphics enhancing the look.

On top of this, the focus on flashy and interesting action makes it an appealing choice for an Assassin's Creed fan. The story is just as intense as some of the Assassin's Creed games, and this helps keep the more linear game engaging.

The main aspect No More Heroes has with Assassin's Creed is a focus on assassinating, but other than this, the games are pretty different. However, if you like stories and games that revolve around assassins, no matter the time period, then trying out any of the games in the No More Heroes series is a great idea.

No More Heroes takes a unique approach to gameplay, with the high-tension boss encounters balanced out with more mundane daily tasks that help you relate to the light-sword wielding main character. The stylised world, and unconventional approach to gameplay was not for everyone, but this cult-classic is worth trying.

When Assassin's Creed decided to go in a new direction with Origins and pivot the franchise from an action-adventure to more of an RPG, comparisons were quickly made with CD Projekt RED's genre-defining action RPG. After all both games featured an expansive open world, historically inspired settings and the ability to fight people and creatures alike, with the newer Assassin's Creed also incorporating a scaling gear system and redesigned combat that The Witcher 3 implemented so well.

Considering recent Assassin's Creed DLC has openly embraced fantasy and mythology, fans of Odyssey and Valhalla should find themselves right at home - and it doesn't hurt that The Witcher 3 is one of the most acclaimed games in recent memory.

Of course, you can’t list games like Assassin’s Creed without mentioning Hideo Kojima’s Konami swansong, Metal Gear Solid 5. Considered by many to be the gold standard for modern stealth games, Solid Snake’s fifth mainline entry features incredible attention to detail in terms of enemy AI and how you can sneak up on them.

While the modern-day setting may take some getting used to, those who enjoyed the sneaking sections of earlier Assassin’s Creed games will have a (noiseless) riot with this open-world stealth sandbox. There's even a minigame allowing you to build up offshore troops, which is reminiscent of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood's assassins mechanic.

Much like Assassin's Creed, From Software's breakout hit for the PS3 blazed its own trail to the point where it spawned a whole subgenre, the fittingly-tagged "Soulslike." Fast-forward a decade and a half, and this esteemed APRG's come full circle with this epic remake of the original Demon's Souls for PS5.

Souls vets will tell you that this grind-it-out journey and its ilk are quite a bit tougher than Ubisoft's epic. Yet, Demon's Souls bring similarly deep adventure gameplay, intense close-range combat, and a majestic fantasy backdrop.

Despite their grand, imaginative themes, Assassin's Creed and Far Cry are two popular series from Ubisoft which are both somewhat grounded in reality. The former is period-based while the latter is inspired by oppressive regimes and realistic lush locales of recent history.

But the parallels extend beyond this; as this explosive installment of Far Cry brings a diversity of action-adventure gameplay, and a system of progression that's intuitive and rewarding. In Odyssey and Valhalla fashion, FC6 also dazzles with gorgeous visuals, cinematic flair, and great world-building - punctuated by a great performance by the memorable villain Castillo.

Up until the 2000s, the Dark Knight's name was mostly attributed to simpler, arcade-style action games and brawlers. With the Arkham series, Rocksteady Studios takes some of these core elements and greatly fleshes them out. This is achieved with a fully-realized world, various upgrades/customization, and a fun, nuanced combat system that blends fist-fighting, flashy Bat-moves, and stealth. This really culminates with what many fans view as the high watermark of this entertaining subseries.

Arkham City shines with a rich open world featuring recognizable Batman landmarks, a large cast of iconic villains, and loads of unique tasks to tackle. The game is particularly free-flowing in terms of one's experience and play style. It offers various ways to approach most objectives, and a slew of secondary missions and goodies to collect on top of an already deep campaign, bringing a GTA-like feel to Arkham.

Ever since the AC series became more about exploration, the similarities in games that bring this aspect have gotten more striking. The Legend of Zelda has always taken a magical approach to this quality, which can be seen as a more fantastical setting for an Assassin’s Creed map.

Tears of the Kingdom has some of the best exploration the series has offered, matched with unique gameplay mechanics that are unlike anything else. The nonlinear nature of the game is such that fans of the recent Assassin’s Creed games will feel right at home. And much like the recent entries, Link can partake in a vast array of gameplay elements, from close and long-range combat to puzzle-solving and exploration.

Moreover, the story plays out in a period setting that is very reminiscent of the Assassin’s Creed games. There’s little to no time needed to get yourself accustomed to the controls here, as they’re not only simple to understand but are the predecessors to the controls available in the Assassin’s Creed series.

Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor

The medieval-style setting of this title will remind fans of the Ezio trilogy in the Assassin’s Creed series. On its own, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is well worth the playthrough for being an original take on The Lord of the Rings franchise.

The gameplay is multifaceted in that you can utilize melee combat or make use of the wraith-like abilities the protagonist has due to his fusion with a wraith. The storyline is far more simple compared to other The Lord of the Rings stories, which places the focus right on the action.

Open-worlds are a staple of the Assassin’s Creed series and just about any other game in this regard is appealing to fans. Just Cause 4 might not be as great in quality, but the game delivers well in terms of quantity, as there’s so much to do.

There’s not much to do with combat in Just Cause 4, so you can expect to spend your time exploring the world to your hearts’ content. The weather system brings the unique challenge of circumventing this open world, something not many other games provide.

Many video games feel like a poor man's Assassin's Creed, but Ghost of Tsushima, in many ways, is a rich man's Assassin's Creed, complete with the expected historical setting, collectible to find, and authority to overthrow.

Fans of the game will praise its unbelievably fun sword-fighting, which ranks among the best of all time, which should appeal to you if you've been frustrated with how melee combat has taken a bit of a nosedive in Assassin's Creed.

While every game in the Hitman series featured free-roaming (except for Hitman: Absolution), 2016’s Hitman was the first to make it a kind of sandbox feature. Every location in the game was massive, to the point that you could spend several hours roaming around trying to figure out newer and colorful ways to kill your targets.

Since Assassin’s Creed is also about killing targets in crowds, you’ll feel at home with Hitman, which of course takes place in the modern world. Rather than be bogged down by story elements, this game will allow you to sink your teeth firmly into the assassinations.

The previous games in this series largely stressed hack-and-slash, and PS4’s God of War was the first that revitalized the franchise to incorporate story as a vital element. The similarity with Assassin’s Creed comes in the form of its open world. While God of War places little emphasis on its sandbox feature, it is still a vast place to explore, as it features multiple realms of Nordic mythology.

The combat style is also suitable for someone familiar with Assassin’s Creed, and it won’t take you long to accustom yourself to these controls. As far as the story is considered, it is miles better than any plot Assassin’s Creed has ever offered.
