Time can be strange in the video game world as it either goes much slower or much faster than in real life. As such, several games can pack a lifetime's worth of adventures into a single night. And while this can be logistically questionable, it often makes for an appealing experience.

After all, this type of story can't involve many prolonged time skips, so you're naturally more connected to the protagonist as you're both experiencing all the same things. It can also accentuate the main character's physical or mental toughness as they don't have time to take a break from their mission. The following examples are some of the best one-night games.

7 Metal Gear Solid

Before the events of the original Metal Gear Solid, Liquid Snake and the rest of his Sons of Big Boss terrorist group took over a nuclear disposal facility on Shadow Moses Island. Solid Snake's job is to infiltrate the place and stop the terrorists.

It's no easy mission as the hero has to deal with plenty of enemies, including a series of special warriors that have incredible abilities. Yet, somehow Snake manages to thwart the antagonists' plans and defeat their strongest members in a single night.

6 Luigi's Mansion

Horror games don't get much more light-hearted than Luigi's Mansion. However, the titular character wouldn't agree with that assessment as he's visibly terrified throughout the game. From his perspective, it's understandable to be afraid as he has to explore a haunted mansion.

Luckily for him, he only has to tangle with all the ghosts for a single night, as that's all the time it takes for the plumber to complete his objective. Admittedly, you don't know it's only been one night, as it's hard to tell how much time is passing while inside the dusty old building. You just have to trust Professor E. Gadd is telling the truth.

5 Until Dawn

Technically, Until Dawn features two nights as there is a short prologue that takes place one year earlier than the rest of the game. However, the main part of the adventure occurs over one night. More specifically, it lasts from dusk until dawn - hence the title of the game.

A lot happens in that relatively short time period. It begins with a group of friends meeting up at a large lodge in the mountains. Things quickly go south for the protagonists when they learn they aren't the only ones up there. They then spend the night trying to stay alive.

4 Resident Evil 2

In most of the early Resident Evil games, the protagonists have to face one or two nights of horror. For Leon and Claire, in both RE2 and its remake, they have to survive for a single night before they can reach safety.

The day starts fine for both characters. Leon gets ready for his first day as a Racoon City police officer while Claire goes into the city to see her brother. Yet, by nighttime, the streets are filled with zombies. Thankfully, both characters are excellent survivors, so they can fend off many monsters.

3 Oxenfree

This narrative-focused game is about a teenager named Alex going to the mysterious Edwards Island with her friends. It's supposed to be a fun trip, but it doesn't exactly pan out that way. Within the first few hours of being there, Alex realizes that she's not on a typical island.

There are supernatural things happening all around her, and Alex spends the rest of the night trying to figure out the mystery behind it all. You could argue that this game lasts a bit longer than one night, as it bleeds into the next day. However, the conclusion occurs in the early hours of the morning, so it should still count as a one-night game.

2 Outlast

Richard Trager from Outlast

Outlast stars Miles Upshur, a journalist who visits the Mount Massive Asylum for a story. But, when he gets there, he discovers that all the staff have been killed. While Miles doesn't intend to stick around to suffer the same fate, there's no easy way out. And he spends the whole night trying to escape the creepy asylum and all the monsters roaming the place.

For Miles, it probably seems a lot longer than one night as he doesn't even have any weapons to fend off the monsters. If he'd been stuck in that asylum for multiple days, the protagonist wouldn't have stood a chance.

1 Batman: Arkham City

Batman lands a jumping kick right in the face of a prisoner in Arkham City.

Throughout the Batman Arkham series, the titular hero likes to get his work done in one night. It makes sense as he only dons the cowl at nighttime since he's busy with Bruce Wayne business during the day. Yet, in Arkham City, it seems like even Batman would struggle to complete his mission in a single night. After all, the caped crusader has a lot of situations to sort out.

His primary focuses are to stop Hugo Strange from killing everyone in Arkham City and cure himself of the deadly toxin in his body. Not to mention there is a bunch of secondary antagonists causing havoc, and the Dark knight is the only one capable of stopping them. He still only needs a single night, though.
