Eastward is not a farming simulator, but instead a regular action JRPG experience. Those that play Eastward join for the art style and stay for the story and characters. There are multiple puzzles within the game as you progress through different levels and dangers.
Eastward follows a very familiar recipe - a lonely, grumpy old man who found himself taking care of a young, outcast girl. You get to switch between John, the grumpy man, and Sam, the strange young girl. Both have different combat tactics and ways to communicate with NPCs.

Serin Fate is another indie farming simulator with RPG elements. The world is full of humanoid-like animals that will come to be your friends and neighbors and plenty of magic too. The game was developed by one person and is actually made to be difficult. Dialogue is important and can contain key information you can't forget. Danger can spell your end quickly if you are not prepared.
You yourself wield magic and can summon different animals to fight by your side, as well as romance NPCs. In the character creator, you can become different races other than human. The world waiting for you has weather and seasonal cycles throughout your journey. The RPG elements are definitely stronger in Serin Fate than in other indie farming games.

Kynseed has a beautiful, promising graphics style. There is an intricate system in the game where you can actually romance someone, have kids with them, and then continue the game by playing as your own children once your main character dies. You live and breathe Kynseed through every generation.
There is a big town with tons of NPCs and shops, as well as deep lore, and the story behind the surrounding forests. The character customization isn't large, but you are able to change skin tone and hair color at the beginning. You get to farm, build a family, build a business, and find out what is hiding beneath the surface.

Littlewood is a simple little game with the cutest-looking sprites. As the story goes, you have already defeated the monsters that threatened humankind and your small town. The adventure and fight have been long over, and it is time for you and your neighbors to rebuild the town and start living in peace and harmony. No need to worry about monsters and if you are going to make it through the night.
This is a management game where you work toward city-building in a way. Make houses for your neighbors, craft decorations and shops, and make the town feel alive again. There is romancing and farming in the game, as well. This is all about sitting back and relaxing with little action-RPG elements.

Corekeeper has farming elements in the game, but it is mainly action-RPG focused. It deserves a spot on the list nonetheless because it encapsulates the moments you are out in the mines and tackling beasts in the forest. There is a lot of crafting, survival, and dungeon crawling.
Join a group of friends and create a safe haven underground. Start a farm and build yourself a mansion with all the riches you find from venturing out into the unruly caves. The developers are constantly supporting the game and coming out with holiday events and themes to keep players engaged.

In this cute little game, you play as a little Turnip Boy who doesn't play by anybody's rules. This is an exploration RPG where you get to learn more about adorable characters and kick butt. There are puzzles, combat, and bosses to defeat. The game does have a farming element, but it is not the main focus.
You are able to find and unlock different hats for your turnip boy to wear and find different food-based NPCs who provide side quests for you to solve. The story follows Turnip Boy and his journey toward attempting to commit tax evasion. The great thing is, there are multiple endings to this game. You decide what happens to Turnip Boy. Will he go to jail? Or will he run away with a pretty beetroot and live happily ever after?

In this cartoonish 2D environment, you can build your farm from the ground up, decorate it, and travel to and from the village. Interact with NPCs and find the match for you, who you will plan to marry.
