Although GameStop has been looking for ways to maintain itself as a relevant entity in today’s gaming market, a recent error in their system seems intent on preventing that, causing users to report that their pre-orders for Cyberpunk 2077 have been cancelled. This is particularly worrisome for fans who were hoping to secure the limited Collector’s Edition, which sold out shortly after becoming available months ago.

As previously reported, users on the popular site Resetera began noticing that their orders had simply vanished without a trace, causing many to check and confirm that they too do not seem to have any history of having made their pre-orders. Some were left wondering if the sudden disappearance of their pre-orders was really an error, or if the company had simply repeated the same mistake they made months before, cancelling pre-orders for some buyers after overselling copies of the Limited Edition Kingdom Hearts 3 that they did not have.

In addition to Cyberpunk 2077, users also reported seeing their pre-orders vanish for Death Stranding and Borderlands 3. GameStop has apparently stated that its site is undergoing maintenance, and that pre-orders should in fact be showing up properly later, but no specifics have been offered regarding when this will occur.

The timing of this error is certainly problematic, as GameStop has been in the news lately for its issues relating to its overall business model. Recently the company cut 120 positions from its corporate office, and before that, roughly 50 regional managers were released in an effort to restructure the business towards a more lean, and hopefully, more profitable entity.

In terms of its actual business practices, GameStop has also recently announced its intention to redesign a number of its locations towards retro gaming and esports teams that are located in nearby areas. In general, they are trying to find new ways to attract buyers back into the store.

With the advent of digital downloads on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, stores like GameStop have been seeing a decrease in their sales as they are cut completely from the sales equation. Many consumers seem more than happy to switch over to digital purchases, but others are cautious about this trend and would prefer physical copies of their games. With a physical copy, one can do as they wish with a game once they no longer want it, and that includes taking it to places like GameStop to trade it in for something new. Digital downloads, meanwhile, occupy this odd space where one owns a game, but cannot do with it as they please, including selling it or trading it in.

Hopefully GameStop can rectify this error, and we certainly hope it is in fact only a temporary error and not a full cancellation. GameStop needs all the help it can get, and permanently cancelling consumer orders is no way to maintain a loyal base of consumers.
