Awesome Games Done Quick, the annual speedrunning marathon that takes place at the beginning of each year, is coming under criticism after granting airtime to Luzbelheim, a runner who has expressed transphobic, nationalist and otherwise discriminatory sentiments online.

Luzbelheim, along with Tojju and Muttski, ran through Final Fantasy VIII over the course of just over nine hours. One runner would hand the controller off to the next in line, relay-style, following the completion of their third of the game. This isn't the first time the trio has contributed to GDQ—last year, they completed a similarly lengthy run of Final Fantasy IX that clocked in at nearly nine and a half hours.

In one widely-shared Twitter thread, user @StebMcDreb draws attention both to Luzbelheim's Twitter bio and a Tweet he made in support of Vox, a Spanish political party. Luzbelheim's bio states both his hate for "feminazism" as well as a strawman characterization of those who include their preferred pronouns in their Twitter bios.

Vox, meanwhile, is a far-right, nationalist political party that aims to repeal a law meant to protect women from abuse and regularly discriminates against Muslims, among other nationalist stances. Viewers of the FF8 run are also reporting that Luzbelheim expressed a desire for the US to "rip and tear through Iran."

In the past, GDQ has banned runners from its events for sexist, transphobic and antisemitic language. This year, GDQ is including runners' preferred pronouns next to their names during the duration of their run for the first time at one of their flagship events.

Some posts online have been quick to defend Luzbelheim, citing his kind in-person demeanor, while others have expressed that Luzbelheim's presence has kept them from watching the livestream or donating through GDQ's fundraising link (instead donating directly to the Prevent Cancer Foundation). While GDQ has unarguably been making efforts toward acceptance and inclusion of those in the speedrunning community who come from a diverse set of backgrounds, many have expressed that Luzbelheim's inclusion in this year's event is contrary to that effort.

Those who decry "feminazism" oftentimes use the distinction between that and feminism to deflect accusations of anti-feminist behavior. However, "feminazism" is a word with no clear definition beyond its combining of feminism and nazism, and is most often used simply to criticize equality for women. Luzbelheim's Twitter bio also states his gender identity as "deminonbinary" and preferred pronouns as "luz/luz." The absurdity of this serves no purpose other than to mock those for whom sharing their preferred pronouns is an affirmation of their gender identity.

And while Luzbelheim only praised the economic policy of Spain's Vox party, he did so without mention one way or another of their nationalist ideology, which for many defines the party and overshadows any of their other platforms.

GDQ has yet to respond to those who felt uncomfortable, unwelcome or unsafe due to Luzbelheim presence, or the statements he made on stream.
