Gearbox Responds To Claptrap Voice Actor's Claims Of Assault

Gearbox has offered up a response to the accusations of CEO Randy Pitchford assaulting former Claptrap voice actor David Eddings.

With Borderlands 3 set for release this year, there's been a back and forth between the pair as to why Eddings has not reprised the role of the loquacious robot. The initial claims focused on differences over pay, as Eddings revealed that the studio did not want to pay him to voice Claptrap in the upcoming game.

Things have since taken an absurd twist. Eddings recently took to Twitter to level an accusation of physical assault at Pitchford, claiming he was manhandled by the Gearbox CEO at GDC 2017.

"I ultimately offered to do it [voice Claptrap] for 'free' in exchange for past royalties owed plus an apology for something I’ve never spoken about publicly until now: Randy physically assaulted me in the lobby of the Marriott Marquis at GDC 2017," he tweeted this week.

Gearbox has since responded to the allegation via a spokesperson, who denied the accusations on Pitchford's behalf.

“Gearbox takes any and all claims of this nature very seriously and we will abstain from commenting on the allegations Dave is making because it is a personnel matter,” the spokesperson told PCGamer. “We appreciate David’s contributions to the Borderlands franchise and have continued to assert we would welcome him back into the mix as the voice of Claptrap and other future opportunities.”

Given Pitchford's penchant for engaging people in online arguments, one would think that he would respond to something like this himself. Just last week, he hit back at Eddings, branding him "bitter and disgruntled." This latest accusation, though, has yet to prompt him to speak up on his own.

Eddings isn't the only VA at the center of a Pitchford controversy. Troy Baker, who lends his voice to Rhys in Tales From The Borderlands, won't be returning for Borderlands 3 either, although Rhys is still involved.

Baker is claiming that he wanted to return but Gearbox would not bring him back. Pitchford, on the other hand, has said that Baker was the one who turned down the role.
