Gears 5 not only showcased a shift in the way games in the series would be named but also took a more narrative and emotional approach to the storytelling.

The game might have centered more on Kait Diaz, but that doesn't mean the rest of the cast went unnoticed. Despite being the 6th game in the franchise, Gears 5 had more than a handful of characters who showcased the best of what the series has to offer. Let's now look at the 10 best characters in Gears 5 and rank them all.

10 Elizabeth Carmine

You would assume that a family as unlucky as the Carmine's would understand by now that they're all born with the fate of dying an untimely and tragic death. Often their deaths are slightly comedic in tone as fans know the fate of a Carmine once they're introduced.

On top of being a capable fighter and Minotaur driver, Lizzie's death made a huge impact on JD Fenix, one of the game's main characters. He sustained both emotional and physical injuries trying to save her, and his whole demeanor changed the moment he saw her perish.

9 Garron Paduk

Garron Paduk was a true war hero but also happened to be a man comfortable with torture. Part of his personality about despising the rich comes from his poor upbringing in Gorasnaya where he grew to view rich people as fools.

Paduk isn't only good with a firearm but also happens to be a multi-linguist. He can speak English, Tyran, Vasgari, and his native language of Gorasni. As the lone surviving member of Echo Squad, it's unclear if he'll be seen as a member of the COG in Gears 6.

8 Fahz

Fahz may seem like a secondary character who's only in the game for comedic relief, but even if that is the case that doesn't mean he's a meaningless part of Gears 5. He also happens to be voiced by iZombie and Harley Quinn alum Rahul Kohli.

He's a fantastic actor who is capable of showcasing a wide range as an actor but works best in that comedic role. He brings Fahz to life and makes the character feel as if he belongs. It's also great to have another non-white character in the mix.

7 Marcus Fenix

In his older days, Marcus Fenix is no longer the main event when it comes to Gears of War characters. The next generation is now in charge of dealing with the Swarm War, but in true Marcus fashion, he can't be left out.

Fans of the series had a tough time seeing their favorite protagonist transition into more of an advisory role, but at the end of the day, it's great that he's even in the newer games. He serves as a great bridge between both of the trilogies and helps them hold together as one long narrative.

6 Damon Baird

During the original trilogy of games, Damon Baird was always seen as the other guy. He wasn't a part of the Marcus/Dom friendship, or as eccentric as Cole Train, but people underestimated how vital he was to the whole operation.

In his older years he fell into becoming the designated tech expert, mechanic, and scientist and proved pivotal in the journeys of Kait, JD, and Del. After the events of V-Day he founded his own company in DB Industries and provided the young crew with JACK.

5 Delmont Walker

Delmont Walker is part of the new Big 3 of the second Gears of War trilogy and JD Fenix's best friend. People assumed that Del was Cole Train's long lost son, but it turns out he was, unfortunately, an orphan.

Despite sounding like a smooth talker Del isn't necessarily the sharpest tool in the box. According to JD, he is notoriously bad at rock, paper, scissors thanks in large part to the fact that he always chooses paper. He'll never be the focus of the narrative, but Del is a solid supporting character that's always there for JD and Kait.

4 JACK

As the only non-human character on this list, JACK must feel pretty great. Whenever a robot character can sacrifice itself and the audience feels the loss emotionally, you know at the very least that people cared about it.

JACK, unfortunately, sacrifices itself during a very pivotal battle against a Kraken. Thankfully players can still see and use the friendly hovering robot in multiplayer if they so choose to. It may not have been as endearing as a Star Wars droid, but people miss JACK nonetheless.

3 JD Fenix

James Dominic Fenix is a Captain and more importantly the son of the legendary Gear soldier known as Marcus Fenix. Many people assumed that JD would take up the mantle as the lead protagonist of the Gears of War franchise in place of his father, but alas it seems that role is now Kait's.

It's really interesting that as an adult JD is so idealistic, which is likely a trait he acquired from his mother Anya Stroud. He's a great leader and friend who only has the best of intentions for them throughout the Swarm War.

2 Myrrah

Myrrah, often referred to as Queen Myrrah, is both the leader and creator of the Locust Horde. She's essentially the primary villain of the series and happens to be Kait Diaz's grandmother.

She sports a cool design as a villain and she's obviously quite powerful because she's responsible for the plague that is the locust horde. Amazingly, one lie by Dr. NIles Samson led Myrrah down a path of vengeance that cascaded into the Lambent and Locust Wars and almost eliminated humans entirely.

1 Kait Diaz

Kait Diaz throughout the last two Gears of War entries has become the primary character for the series. She's an emotionally complex character who also happens to be a source of strength and resilience for women.

There aren't many action-centric and/or shooting games that feature a female as the lead character and the ones that do aren't always written or performed in the best way. Thankfully Kait is voiced by the talented Laura Bailey and has been written in a way that makes her much more than just the female team member.
