Relax, Gears 5 fans, it’s all a process and it seems like our snarky feedback vis-à-vis microtransactions is being heard.

Now, it’s really no huge newsflash to learn that we gamers don’t tend to appreciate microtransactions. With the ever-increasing popularity of mobile games (and the absurd amounts they’re making), it’s no surprise that this sort of structure is now super common, but that doesn’t really make it any more palatable.

As with any other purchase we make, we want to know we’re getting our money’s worth. We don’t want to feel cheated or harangued into paying out for premium in-game currency that gives us a chance at possibly nabbing the character we wanted (oh, sorry, Mario Kart Tour, did you think that was directed at you?) That’s really par for the course with mobile titles, though, and it can sometimes be tough to begrudge quality free-to-play games from making money in some fashion or other.

Gears 5 is a different matter entirely, though. This is a AAA title through and through, the latest release from one of the biggest exclusives in Microsoft’s repertoire. It has a premium price tag to match. The gameplay’s a blast, some of the best from the series to date, but, yet again, microtransactions are rearing their ugly heads. Cosmetics only, for the most part, but some poor choice of banners and such, coupled with high prices, have fans more than a little concerned about the whole system.

Rod Fergusson of The Coalition has taken to Twitter to address these worries. It’s a learning process and things are changing, he promises:

It’s certainly true that the familiar Gears of War formula has been shaken up this time around, with the battle pass system and the inherent changes to the ways players advance. What’s important is that the dreaded concept of pay-to-win doesn’t sneak in here. Interesting optional cosmetics at a fair price? That’s a tough thing to argue against. At the moment, though, it’s not exactly what players are getting.

Keep the lines of communication open, Fergusson, the community appreciates what you’re doing.
