Gears of War developer The Coalition has been very quick to squash rumors circling that the studio is currently working on a new Star Wars game for Microsoft.

GamesBeat reporter Jeff Grubb recently revealed on his weekly gaming news show that Lucasfilm Games is allegedly licensing out the Star Wars franchise to a number of different developers besides EA. One name thrown out by Grubb was Microsoft, a decision that naturally ended up inspiring a number of seemingly baseless rumors from excited fans.

Adding fuel to the fire is today's news that Gears of War developer The Coalition has started developing all of its next-gen titles on Unreal Engine 5. With both pieces of news coming out within a relatively short time of each other, fans have started to speculate that The Coalition is currently working on a Star Wars game for Microsoft.

Fortunately, The Coalition has been very quick to squash this rumor. In a Reddit post earlier today, Gears of War's community manager TC Kilo shut down an enthusiastic fan hoping for a Star Wars game by responding "We are not working on any such title." TC Kilo goes on to say that The Coalition has "nothing else to announce at this time," shutting down rumors before they even have the slightest chance of growing.

Another Reddit user then points out how TC Kilo didn't acknowledge other rumors in the same thread which claimed the studio is working on the next Gears of War game and a brand new IP, taking it as proof that The Coalition is doing just that. It would be surprising if a new Gears game wasn't in development seeing as how popular the franchise is, but this rumored new IP is definitely something worth keeping an eye on.

The Coalition's squashing of this rumor might rule out a Star Wars game coming from that particular studio, but that doesn't rule out the possibility that another developer under Microsoft's wing could be working on one. Only time will tell which developers Lucasfilm Games is collaborating with, though with the digital E3 showcase just around the corner, we may not have to wait too much longer to find out.
