Gears of War, one of Microsoft's biggest and most popular franchises, is getting a live-action movie adaptation for Netflix along with an animated series, according to a new report. Netflix is producing both projects after snagging the rights in a 'competitive enivronment' and are working with The Coalition, developer of Gears of War 4 and Gears 5.

According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, neither project has any filmmakers or producers attached at the moment, so it'll likely be a while before we see them hit our televisions. However, the report states that if these two projects become a success, Netflix will be more than happy to greenlight even more Gears of War projects in the future.

Since both projects seem to be very very early in production, it's unclear as to how the movie or animated series might look. The Coalition being on board to help with production implies that both projects will be pretty lore accurate, but it's unclear whether they'll adapt just one title or squish the whole saga down into a single movie. The most likely scenario is that the Gears of War movie will adapt the first game, while the animated series could tell a new story in the same universe, similar to what Netflix and Studio Trigger did with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

Speaking of Edgerunners, Netflix has likely been emboldened by the success of Studio Trigger's extremely popular series, as well as other well-received properties such as its Witcher and Castlevania series, to take a chance on Gears of War. You could argue that the franchise isn't the most adaptable out there, but Netflix will undoubtedly be hoping to maintain its current hot streak of working with big video game franchises.
