Whether it is purposely trying to be or not, Genshin Impact is a clone of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It has a lot going for it to make it stand out next to its counterpart, though. For example, loot is a big aspect of the game.

Breath of the Wild doesn’t really have that nor does it have multiplayer or even multiple playable characters. So there are things that make Genshin Impact a worthwhile experience even if it is a bit shameless. That said there are certainly things about Genshin, even the positives, that could and should be changed for the better.

10 Sluggish Response Time

First of all, Genshin Impact has a huge problem with way too many menus. Navigating through them is a pain because the response time is a bit laggy on PS4. That might be due to the integration with the Internet, but it shouldn’t be that much of an issue. Trimming down the menus and speeding up the behind the scenes gears would go a long way into making this game better.

9 Load Times

Besides the laggy response time, the actual loads between fast traveling and jumping into homes or temples is not great either. Genshin Impact is far from the worst of the worst in terms of load times. It’s more like fifteen to thirty seconds at most. That said, when one goes inside places a lot and or fast travels, it can add up. Maybe it might be better to wait to play this until the PS5 launches.

8 Control Change

This is not a huge issue, but most new games allow players to customize controls. For the most part, the button placement in Genshin Impact is fine except for the attack button which is mapped to the Circle button. Hacking and slashing just feels more natural with the Square button. Again, it’s not the biggest pain in the world but being able to remap controls would be great for players bothered by this and any other mapping issues that might come up.

7 Auto Pick Up

There will be a lot to pick up on one’s journey, from mining ore to harvesting vegetables to picking up loot left behind by monsters.

Having to manually click on equipment to add loot to the inventory is fine and makes sense. However, having to do this with everything else can become a pain. At least picking up an item like a carrot doesn’t have a long animation attached.

6 Cook In Batches

Speaking of vegetables, it does not appear that one can cook in batches. One cannot simply make five kabobs as just one example. Making one dish does not take that long in general, but every second counts. It would just make the idea of cooking more enticing if one could save time by creating batches.

5 Unlock Quests

A gameplay screenshot from Genshin Impact

This is also not a huge deal but after the initial quest line involving unlocking the first four temples, the next story quest will be locked. From here on out, most big quests will be locked until reaching an Adventure Rank associated with them. It doesn’t take that long to build ranks up especially if one is an avid explorer. However, some prefer to play games just for their stories so locking these quests away does seem a bit silly.

4 Unlock Co-Op Right Away

The most egregious thing that is locked away is co-op. One cannot get into multiplayer until Adventure Rank 16 is achieved which is a good third, or even halfway through the game depending. Any game that locks multiplayer in this way always seems crazy. Why force players to play that much alone when it might be more beneficial for the company to lure in more people at the start?

3 Get Rid Of Paimon, Voice The Hero

A gameplay screenshot from Genshin Impact

Paimon is essentially Genshin Impact’s version of Navi from Ocarina of Time. That’s right, this game lifts from other Zelda adventures as well and somehow outdoes Nintendo on the annoying companion. Even though players are voiced in the intro, they lose their voice after it. Paimon then becomes the surrogate for their voice. Take her away and give back the player’s voice.

2 Remove Subtitles

On top of that suggestion, and coinciding a bit with the control mapping entry, Genshin Impact should also have the option to remove subtitles.

Keeping them on for voiceless conversations makes obvious sense, but why are they needed in cutscenes– especially action oriented ones? It’s another small problem on the list which isn’t a huge to do, but some players really find subtitles annoying. Options are always nice in general.

1 Gacha Mechanic Tweaks

Genshin Impact, despite it being an obvious clone, is actually a good game as far as reviews go. The one thing that is baffling are the gacha mechanics. Why are they needed? They aren’t and don’t really get in the way either until one figures out that the amount of resources and currencies in the game are tied to the gacha mechanics. Like the menu situation, it just becomes unruly. Tweaking the amount of currencies and retooling the gacha mechanics would be much appreciated.
