While most of the comparisons between Genshin Impact and Breath of the Wild are pretty surface level, there are definitely some mechanical similarities that can be drawn between the two. For example, both titles place an active emphasis on the act of fishing — and while fishing may be one of the most common side activities in video games, Genshin Impact makes the process so simple you may accidentally overlook it as a mechanic altogether. Here is everything you need to know about how to fish in Genshin Impact.

How To Fish In Genshin Impact

In most games that involve fishing, you can expect to find, unlock, purchase, or otherwise obtain a fishing rod of some form before the option will open up for you. That's not the case with Genshin Impact. Not only do you not need a rod, you don't need any special equipment at all. The only thing you need to do is find a body of water with fish and go grab them. There's no mini-game, QTEs, or anything like that.

Fish are very common in most of the game's smaller bodies of waters, like lakes and rivers, but you'll want to always check the water's color before wading out in search of these slippery creatures. Light blue water, where you can see the sand below the surface, is safe to go hunting for fish in, but keep away from the dark blue water that means instant death. Fish won't be out that deep anyway, so stick to the shallows.

The fish in Genshin Impact are quite lazy, making it easy to get right up and collect them in one of two ways. If the fish are in shallow enough water that you can stand, all you need to do is hit them with your weapon to turn them into fish meat you can pick up at your leisure. If you're deep enough to be swimming, then you just need to get close enough to the fish to hit a prompt to collect them like they were an item. Just be careful not to run out of stamina chasing down fish, or your character could end up drowning without their dinner.
