Genshin Impact saw the release of Version 2.1 on September 1, and it generated a massive influx of cash for Mihoyo. According to new data from SensorTower, the first week of this month saw more player spending than the entirety of August – likely due to the sprawling 2.1 update.

New characters to pull and regions to explore were the main draws of the update, although there's also plenty of in-game events and a new fishing system to keep players busy. However, it seems most players were kept busy by opening their wallets and throwing down a record amount of cash.

"During the seven days from August 25 to 31, the game accumulated approximately $31 million in gross revenue globally across the App Store and Google Play," Craig Chapple, mobile insights strategist at Sensor Tower, said. "Between September 1 to 7, when version 2.1 was released, player spending saw a nearly five times increase compared to the week prior, rising to $151 million. That means players spent $21.6 million a day on average over the past week, compared to $4.4 million the week prior."

Chapple goes on to note that China accounted for the largest portion of revenue over that week, with nearly 37% of total player spending coming from the region. The United States and Japan round out the top three, garnering 20% and 19%, respectively.

Genshin Impact shows no signs of slowing down, and it'll be interesting to see how Mihoyo steers the popular game throughout the rest of 2021.
