Ghost of Tsushima is a rousing success for PlayStation. It's a brand new IP much like Horizon Zero Dawn and Death Stranding and, like those two, it's a hit. Last night, it crossed the eight million sales threshold as more and more people are buying into this new world.
It originally launched for PlayStation 4 but got a PS5 Director's Cut version last year adding a whole new island to explore, expanding on Jin's story. It's even getting a movie from Chad Stahleski, known for directing the John Wick films. So yeah, Ghost of Tsushima did alright.
The news was announced at CES 2022 where Sony also unveiled PSVR 2 and even a new game for the hardware, Horizon Call of the Mountain. This news was accompanied by the announcement of a long-rumoured project, the Twisted Metal TV series. Ghost of Tsushima is in good company. For comparison, 13.4 million PS5 units have been sold, meaning that Tsushima isn't far behind current-gen consoles. It's also right there with Zero Dawn which has also sold over eight million copies.
It was developed by Sucker Punch who has worked on some other fairly beloved PlayStation games such as Infamous and Sly Cooper, but it seems its future is rooted in its newest success. Ghost of Tsushima 2 hasn't been announced yet, but with its success in sales, critical reception, and audience reception, it's only a matter of time. It could continue the story of Jin Sakai, or it could become a historical series to rival Assassin's Creed.
It's set during the first Mongol invasion of Japan with you playing as Jin Sakai, a former samurai. If that's your thing, you can pick the Director's Cut up right now on the PlayStation store as part of the January sale for £52.49, down from £69.99. Best get caught up to speed before the inevitable sequel announcement and movie release, aye? In the meantime, you can look forward to God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West, the latter of which is out only next month.
