According to the new series director, God of War Ragnarok will end the "Norse Saga" for Kratos and his son and will deliver a "surprising yet inevitable" conclusion to their epic journey.

Since its reveal, there have been plenty of different theories about the upcoming sequel and its plot, but we still don't have a clear picture of how the sequel's story will unfold. However, God of War's new director Eric Williams — who was earlier called a "motherfu**ing beast" by lead actor Christopher Judge — hinted that God of War fans will be amazed by Ragnarok's finale.

Speaking to IGN, Eric Williams revealed that with God of War Ragnarok, Santa Monica Studio wanted to tell "a very heartfelt and epic story" about the father and son duo on a journey and their inner struggle. In the director's words, players will see dramatic slices of their life and how they deal with their emotions, and it was important for the team to deliver a proper ending for both titles at once.

Williams is convinced that "mundane things are just as interesting as big world events," so perhaps you can expect more personal, smaller tidbits about Kratos and his son. With the harsh Norse environment around them, the team at Santa Monica say they've crafted "an experience that's very worthy of the God of War name."

"At the end, we just want to have an ending that feels very [...] surprising yet inevitable based on all those things," Williams explained. Additionally, the director confirmed that Ragnarok will indeed happen in the game — just as you can suggest from its title. "Prepare yourselves," he warned.

Previously, Cory Barlog compared the experience of playing both Norse Saga games to binge-watching The Lord of the Rings extended trilogy, which he described as a contained and satisfying story. The follow-up will also greatly improve upon the combat system, adding verticality and new skills, including various defensive abilities for retractable shields.

God of War Ragnarok will launch on PS4 and PS5 in 2022.
