Introduced in God of War 2018, the Leviathan Axe had the difficult task of becoming the signature weapon for a series that already has one of the most iconic weapons in gaming. Though the Blades of Chaos weren't excluded, the axe still proved itself to be a magnificent weapon, worthy of being wielded the retired God of War. As expected, the weapon continues with us in Ragnarok, and, also as expected, we have many runic attacks to attach to it.

However, since we can only have two equipped, a light and a heavy one, you might be wondering which ones to choose. Well, we've ranked them for you.

10 Skadi's Edge (Light)

Pick multiple targets and throw the axe at them. The axe will bounce between the targets you marked before throwing it, so you can get some good and guaranteed hits from this one. That said, if you have good aim, this one isn't as useful, and you can trigger a lot of powerful attacks with the regular throw regardless. But you could throw the axe using this runic attack and proceed to fight with another weapon.

9 Njörd's Tempest (Light)

The Leviathan Axe and Njord's Tempest Runic Attack, from God of War Ragnarok

A small area attack, where Kratos spins around and hits whoever is close to him. It doesn't hurt all that much, but you can get multiple enemies with this strike. The attack also pushes them back, so it's good in case you want to control the area, or when you have a lot of enemies surrounding you. You can get environmental kills via this attack - pretty useful for the Muspelheim trials.

8 Hel's Touch (Light)

The Leviathan Axe and Hel's Touch Runic Attack, from God of War Ragnarok

This is the first runic attack you get in God of War 2018. It follows a somewhat similar premise to the previous one, inflicting stun upon your enemy, but the area is larger and the attack is quicker to execute. However, these perks come with a cost - this attack doesn't hurt all that much. This runic attack is a lot more useful for stopping enemies' attacks than actually hurting them. Could save you against a Berserker, at least.

7 Winter's Bite (Light)

The Leviathan Axe and Winter's Bite Runic Attack, from God of War Ragnarok

Among the runic attacks that you get during the main story, this one is quite useful. It's nothing but a straightforward attack on whoever is in front of you, but it can cause some decent damage, especially if upgraded, and it's pretty quick to use.

It can also hit multiple enemies if they're close to one another. It's also useful for stopping stronger attacks, making it a key runic attack against bosses too.

6 Fog Of Fimbulwinter (Heavy)

Take the previous runic attack and turn it up to 11. The damage isn't the greatest compared to other heavy attacks, but the forward attack spreads in a cone, allowing you to take multiple enemies a lot easier. It also pushes them away from you, allowing for some environmental kills, and freezes them, so you can take advantage of all that.

5 Wrath Of The Frost Ancient (Light)

The Leviathan Axe and Wrath of the Frost Ancient Runic Attack, from God of War Ragnarok

As light attacks go, this one can cause some real damage. You fire an ice beam that can be aimed during its execution, allowing you to hit one or multiple enemies with it. The attack will also last longer if you hold down the button, and enemies will get stunlocked as well. It makes you vulnerable though, so beware of other enemies when using this one.

4 Mists Of Helheim (Heavy)

The Leviathan Axe and Mists of Helheim Runic Attack, from God of War Ragnarok

A powerful strike on the floor that will hurt and freeze the enemies around the area. There are more painful options (which we'll talk about soon), but the area affected by the mists will keep freezing whoever enters the area for a while, making it an interesting option for crowd control. You can safely take care of weaker enemies while the big one is too busy being a popsicle, for instance.

3 Leviathan's Roar (Heavy)

Keeping with the area attacks, though this one is a large cone in front of you. This attack is divided into two parts; You throw your axe against someone of your choosing, and then, when the axe returns to you, it will hit your shield, releasing a powerful gust forward.

Imagine MCU Mjölnir hitting Captain America's shield. It's not the most powerful area attack, but it's good for stunning your enemies, and the shield protects you from attacks you may not see coming.

2 Ivaldi's Anvil (Heavy)

The Leviathan Axe and Ivaldi's Anvil Runic Attack, from God of War Ragnarok

A great area attack all around. You hit the ground once - twice, if upgraded - unleashing a powerful frost attack on surrounding enemies. It also staggers the enemies and freezes them up a bit. That makes them vulnerable to further attacks, so you can just pick your next unlucky target and proceed from there. It's also a quick attack to execute, in comparison to other heavy attacks.

1 Breath Of Thamur (Heavy)

The Leviathan Axe and Breath of Thamur Runic Attack, from God of War Ragnarok

This is one of the strongest area attacks, even compared to the other weapons. You create a powerful gust that traps and hurts all enemies around you, and the range of this attack is surprisingly large. You get stuck in the middle of the area, which would make you vulnerable, but given the large area, it's unlikely that an enemy won't be trapped in it. This one will require some raven hunting though.
