Despite how excited most fans were to see the new content for God of War: Ragnarok during the PlayStation Showcase earlier this week, some have taken to the internet to complain about the characters’ appearances. On the one hand, we have people complaining about the look of Thor, as he is a beefy red-head instead of the model-bodied, blonde Chris Hemsworth that people are used to. Apparently, they do not want to see a “fat Thor,” despite the fact that this newer depiction is actually accurate to Norse mythology.

In addition to Thor, some also complained about how the character Angrboda is black instead of white in the upcoming game. It seems that people are throwing a fit about how black people are not in Norse mythology, and therefore the character should be white instead.

On a recent twitter post by cosplayer Alanna Smith, she mentioned her excitement to cosplay Angrboda soon. Since people can’t help themselves, someone commented, “I don’t understand why a black person?” In response, she said, “Because Black people exist,” to which someone else had to say, “not in norse mythology maam.”

Luckily, it was at this time that the Narrative Director of God of War: Ragnarok, Matt Sophos, stepped into the thread. He responded to the comment that black people aren’t a part of Norse mythology with the following: “Do they also have blue Dwarves in Norse mythology? Was Loki the son of a Greek demigod? Please show me in the Eddas where it says that all Jötunn were lily white? Let me save you the time… you can’t. I’ve read them.”

The argument continued with the same butthurt person responding with more irrelevant points, but Sophos successfully shut this person down, hopefully along with many others who are offended by the existence of a black person in this God of War: Ragnarok story. It seems there is a group of gamers out there who seek out reasons to get upset, but Angrboda is here to stay, so they might as well get used to it.
