There are many things God of War is known for. One of them is its big, brash, and memorable boss fights, and Ragnarok is no exception. As Kratos and Artreus carve their way through Norse mythology, some enemies stand above the rest.

As there are a lot of bosses and sub-bosses to go through, we'll focus on the baddies you face throughout the main campaign of the game. Style and creativity also go for the ranking here, not just the hard time they gave us.

This article contains spoilers for God Of War Ragnarok.

11 Bjorn

As to be expected, the first boss is also the easiest. He's slow, and is essentially just here to teach you about blocking, parrying, and dodging.

Still, it's an intense moment in terms of the story, given that it's Atreus transformed into bear form. Oh, and just for curiosity, this is not a special name or anything; Bjorn just means bear.

10 Thor - Round One

Kratos and Thor fighting in God of War: Ragnarok

The second-easiest fight comes from the second boss of the game, the god of thunder himself, Thor. This fight can't demand much from you, since we haven't got a lot of moves and weapons unlocked just yet.

Despite being a bit easy gameplay-wise, the story beats here are very powerful, with Thor even killing you. Your death may be scripted, but it's a fun moment nonetheless.

9 Vanadis (Freya)

Guess all the Valkyrie warm-ups prepared us for the Queen. That, or she wasn't too sure if she wanted to kill us. Her sudden attack against us doesn't prove to be quite challenging, despite her being a lot faster compared to the previous encounters.

She's easy to block and parry though, and you can be quite aggressive toward her. A pretty straightforward boss fight, but still a fun one.

8 Garm

Things got a bit heated in Helheim for a change. The giant wolf from Norse Mythology (the other one) proved to be a good fight here. Luckily for us, his size makes his move easy to discern, so it's easy to prepare yourself for what's to come.

However, his size makes it a bit difficult to dodge since his attacks cover a large area. Regardless, it's still pretty manageable.

7 Alva

Light Elves prove to be fierce fighters in this game, much more than their counterparts. They excel at both speed and strength, making them quite the challenge. Add that to Alva, which is not only a Light Elf but also a boss, and she'll take everything you've learned from fighting these guys and put it to the test.

Lots of unblockable moves, and attacks that require you to hit her with the shield. Beware of your distance to Alva, as shield attacks require close proximity

6 Grýla

Gryla fighting Atreus in God of War Ragnarok

Despite still being on the easier side of the list, this fight deserves its merit for being more elaborate on how you need to fight her.

You can't hurt her, so you have to target her cauldron only, and be on the defensive when she gets closer due to her size. The environment comes into play a lot here, making this fight a unique encounter from the game.

5 Heimdall

With all the preparations made to face this guy, including forging a whole new weapon just for him, he didn't prove to be such a challenge. Not that he's easy, but not that he's hard either.

After killing his mount, you have a tricky part where you need to rely on your Draupnir Spear to make him vulnerable, which forces you to be creative on how to use your weapon. At first, he'll pick it up, but things get tougher later. Once that part is out of the way, you just fight him in straightforward combat and get rid of him. The spear was a great addition to the game, though, so the preparation was worth it.

4 Nidhogg

Intense, long, and complicated. This is one of the best boss fights, having a similar vibe to Hræzlyr, the dragon from God of War 2018.

You need to use specific weapons to make her vulnerable, and avoid a lot of unblockable attacks and the Bifrost effect. It also showcases the teamwork between Kratos and Freya, marking the end of her vengeance toward Kratos.

3 Hrist And Mist

Did you miss the Valkyries? Well, here are some more. Despite the bad memories, they aren't as deadly compared to the previous game, since main bosses are generally easier.

Regardless, fighting two at the same time is very complicated, and though they share a health bar, they restore it twice during the fight, giving them three health bars overall. Their speed is also a lot greater compared to most on this list, so proper timing is essential here.

2 Thor - Round Two

Payback time. This fight is a vast improvement, although it is to be expected. This one is near the end, and now you have better weapons, attacks, and armor.

Thor no longer holds back on this one too, using a lot of powerful attacks that control the arena. You can't stay too far since you may need your shield to stop his most powerful tricks. It's also a beautiful story moment, showing Kratos sparing an enemy for a change.

1 Odin

The main enemy of this saga, the Zeus of this region, with a fight that is difficult as well as full of powerful story moments. This is the only fight where you have two companions at your side, too.

Despite not being a brawler, his magical prowess makes him quite the threat. The culmination of everything you've learned playing the game is put to good use here, even using platforming aspects at one point. Then, once you fall into his study room, a good old beating takes place. Sometimes, all we need is a large room with the baddie on the other side to whale on.
