A sequel to 2018's God of War has been rumored for quite some time now, but nothing was made official until God of War: Ragnarok was announced during Wednesday's PS5 showcase. You might be surprised though to learn that the game was actually revealed all the way back in April of 2019 thorough a series of tweets from Cory Barlog, the creative director at SIE Santa Monica Studio.

Last year, Barlog wrote a series of tweets chronicling his last six years at Santa Monica Studio with dozens of behind the scenes photos showing the God of War development process. If you read only the first letter in each of these tweets, you'll discover the message, "Ragnarok is Coming."

That very same message appeared in the teaser trailer for God of War: Ragnarok, which we now know is coming to the PS5 in 2021. Obviously, everybody missed Barlog's hidden message and it appears as if it had only been discovered after the game's official announcement by a Reddit user named Sangaria4.

Now, we know for certain that a God of War sequel has been real all this time, and we also have confirmation that the game will be returning to focus on Norse mythology. Thor was mentioned by name in the first game, and we just might finally see a showdown between Kratos and the God of Thunder himself when God of War: Ragnarok is released.

Another interesting thing to look out for will be whether or not Santa Monica Studio decides to return to the one-shot cinematic approach of the original game. The unique feature reportedly added a lot of difficulty to development, but the end result did a lot to contribute to the overall experience that was God of War.

While you're waiting for God of War: Ragnarok to drop on PS5, you'll be able to revisit the original game on Sony's next-gen console thanks to PlayStation Plus Collection. A prequel comic for the 2018 game dropped over the summer as well. There's no guarantee that Kratos and Thor really will square off in God of War: Ragnarok, but we'll certainly be crossing our fingers until then.
