God of War Ragnarok has an abundance of unique enemies that appear throughout the game. As the game progresses and the enemies get stronger, the need to upgrade your weapons grow as you deal little to no damage to them. Each weapon has different weapon material needed to increase its level. After acquiring a crafting component, you can bring them to any Blacksmith to upgrade your weapon.

This guide will cover four weapons, the Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos, Draupnir Spear, and the Thrungva. For some materials, you will have to defeat all the required enemies to acquire them. Here is all you need to know about acquiring all the weapon upgrade materials.

Many folks, us included, are giving the game a second run-through. And this time, we're being thorough. With the weapons being paramount to our combat abilities, upgrades remain as important as ever. So to make sure everyone is as prepared as possible, we've revisited this guide and given it a second pass of polish.

Upgrading The Leviathan Axe

Leviathan Axe is one of your primary weapons that you have from the start of the game. Upgrading the weapon requires the Frozen Flame, which is a crafting material. The game has eight Frozen Flames, which you can use to upgrade your Axe to level nine.

You will acquire most of the Flames in the story as they are non-missable. However, for a few, you must complete side missions, defeat bosses, or venture into the nine realms to acquire items.

Frozen Flame 1

For the first Frozen Flame, you will have to beat The Huntress in the Lower Wildwoods of Midgard. She appears in the main story mission, "Surviving Fimbulwinter." After the boss is defeated, she will drop the Frozen Flame, which you can pick up as loot from the ground.

The second Frozen Flame is located in Alfheim during the main story mission, "Groa's Secret." Near the end of the mission, you will come to face Alva. Defeating her will drop the Frozen Flame for you to collect.

Frozen Flame 3

The third Frozen Flame is located in Vanaheim during the main story mission, "The Reckoning." You will have to face Nidhogg and defeat it. After this, Freya will no longer be bound to Midgard. You can then collect your Frozen Flame from the ground.

Frozen Flame 4

The fourth Frozen Flame is located in Helheim during the main story mission, "Reunion." You will have to face the Hel-Traveller that blocks your path. Defeating it will drop the Frozen Flame.

Frozen Flame 5

The fifth Frozen Flame is located in Muspelheim during the main story mission, "The Summoning." Here you will have to face the Flame Phantom. Defeating it will drop the Frozen Flame.

Frozen Flame 6

For this Frozen Flame, you will have to complete two Favors. As you progress through the game, you can start the "Scent of Survival" Favor. Once you complete this Favor, the next Favor, "For Vanaheim!" will automatically start. Near the end of the mission, you will have to face The Crimson Dread dragon. Once the dragon is defeated, you will get the sixth Frozen Flame.

Frozen Flame 7

The seventh Frozen Flame is located in Alfheim in The Barrens. After completing the "Secret of the Sands" Favor, you will free Hafgufa and stop the sandstorm in the area. You can then interact with the Berserker Gravestone. This will start a fight with Svipdagr the Cold and Sisters of Illska. After you have defeated these challenging foes, you will get the Frozen Flame.

After you complete the main story mission, "Reunion," you can start the Favor "Hel to Pay." This Favor requires you to seal the several Hel Tears spawned in the nine realms. For sealing each Hel Tear, you will get a Frozen Spark. After sealing the six Hel Tears, you will get six Frozen Spark to make a Frozen Flame.

Upgrading The Blades Of Chaos

Blades of Chaos is another of the primary weapons you have from the start of the game. Upgrading the weapon requires the Chaos Flame, which is a crafting material. The game has eight Chaos Flames, which you can use to upgrade your Blades to level nine.

Chaos Flame 1

The first Chaos Flame is located in Svartalfheim during the main story mission, "The Quest for Tyr." You will come to face Dreki on your way to Applecore. Defeat it, and you will get the Chaos Flame.

Chaos Flame 2

The second Chaos Flame is located in Vanaheim during the main story mission, "The Reckoning." You will come across the Forest Ancient, who is a boss. Defeat it, and you will get your second Chaos Flame.

Chaos Flame 3

The third Chaos Flame is located in the Well of Urd of Midgard during the main story mission, "The World of Fate." Here you will have to face the Frost Phantom. After you defeat it, you can collect the Choas Flame from the ground.

Chaos Flame 4

The fourth Chaos Flame is located in Freyr's Camp in Vanaheim during the main story mission, "Creatures of Prophecy." You will face two Drekis. You will have to defeat them both to get the Chaos Flame.

Chaos Flame 5

The fifth Chaos Flame is located in Sutr's Forge in Muspelheim during the main story mission, "The Summoning." During this mission, you will come across two Soul Eaters. Defeat them both to get the Chaos Flame.

Chaos Flame 6

For the sixth Choas Flame, you must first find the two Muspelheim Seeds. After you acquire the first Seed, "The Crucible" Favor will start. The first Seed is inside a Legendary Chest at Modvitnir's Rig in Svartalfheim. The second Seed is located inside another Legendary Chest in Alberich Hollow. After obtaining both seeds, travel to Muspelheim and complete the Crucible Challenges. Once the challenges are over, you will get the Chaos Flame.

Chaos Flame 7

The seventh Chaos Flame is in The Sinkholes in Vanaheim. Inside the area, you can find a Berserker Gravestone. Interact with it to start the fight with Haklangr the Bearded. Defeat him, and you will get the Chaos Flame.

Chaos Flame 8

For the final Chaos Flame, instead of collecting the Flame, you will have to collect the Chaos Sparks. These Chaos Sparks are dropped from The Hateful, located around the nine realms. Once you defeat all the six Hateful, you will get all the six Chaos Sparks that will make one Chaos Flame.

Upgrading The Draupnir Spear

Draupnir Spear acts as a ranged weapon for Kratos. You acquire it during the main story mission, "Forging Destiny." Upgrading the weapon requires the Gale Flame. There are four Gale Flames that will max your Spear.

Gale Flame 1

The first Gale Flame is located in Muspelheim during the main story mission, "The Summoning." You will have to fight two valkyries, Hrist and Mist. Defeating them will drop a Gale Flame for you.

Gale Flame 2

After completing the Favor "Scent of Survival," you will need to make your way to the celestial altar. Change it to nighttime and start the "Nocturnal Predator" Favor in The Crater of Vanaheim. As you progress through the Favor, you will have to fight a Flame Phantom. Defeating it will get you your second Gale Flame.

For the third Gale Flame, travel to Jarnsmida Pitmines in Svartalfheim and interact with the Berserker Gravestone there. This will initiate the fight with Bodvar the Fierce and Starolfr the Troublesome. After the fight is over, you will acquire the Gale Flame.

After defeating Nidhogg during the main story mission, "The Reckoning," make your way to Sindri's House and talk to Ratatoskr. He will give you the Favor "The Lost Lindwyrms" and a trap needed to bring back all six Lindwyrms. The Lindwyrms are located around the nine realms. Finding one will get you a Gale Spark. Collect six Gale Spark to make it into a Gale Flame and upgrade your weapon to the max.

Upgrading The Thrungva

Thrungva is the primary weapon that Freya uses. Upgrading it requires the Folkvangr Whetstone. Two Folkvangr Whetstone are required for the upgrades.

For the first Whetstone, you must go to The Forbidden Sands in Alfheim. Here you need to complete the Favor "Freyr's Gift." You will get a Folkvangr Whetstone as a reward for completing the Favor.

The second Whetstone is located inside a Legendary Chest in Alberich Hollow in Svartalfheim. However, to reach the chest, you must have access to the Draupnir Spear, which unlocks during the main story mission, "Forging Destiny."

The third Whetstone is inside a Legendary Chest in The Lost Treasury in Midgard. You will visit this area during the Favor "Sigrun's Curse."

Folkvangr Whetstone 4

For the fourth Folkvangr Whetstone, you must complete the Favor "Casualty of War: The Brooch" in The Plains in Vanaheim. During this Favor, you will encounter Egil the Oath Guard, who you must defeat to acquire the last Whetstone.
