The new God of War has become the fastest selling PlayStation 4 exclusive, selling more than 3.1 million copies worldwide in its first three days of release, the Official PlayStation Blog announced today. In comparison to other big selling PS4 games, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End sold over 2.7 million copies worldwide in its first week, according to PlayStation, and Horizon Zero Dawn sold over 7.6 million copies worldwide after its first year of release according to PlayStation. When looking at these numbers, God of War's sales in three days is truly monumental.

On the PlayStation Blog, the head of Santa Monica Studio, Shannon Studstill, shared a message for the fans:

Shannon Studstill: “I would like to personally thank the millions of fans around the world who decided to embark on Kratos’ latest adventure with us. Your support is truly inspiring, and it’s a reason why we push ourselves every day to go beyond the boundaries of play. I’d also like to thank our Creative Director, Cory Barlog, and Director of Product Development, Yumi Yang and our entire amazing team at Santa Monica Studio. The belief in the game’s vision and the passion for storytelling across the team is undeniable. We look forward to hearing more about how fans are creating new memories of their favorite God of War gameplay moments that will be remembered for a long time.”

Not only is God of War the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive, it is also the highest rated on Metacritic aside from The Last of Us Remastered. (Grand Theft Auto V is also higher, but that was not a PS4 exclusive.) It is also so far the highest rated game of 2018 on Metacritic alongside Celeste for Xbox One. Clearly, according to many, God of War is a game not to be missed. It wouldn't be a stretch to call it a game of the year contender already.

The God of War franchise began on the PlayStation 2, as a hack and slash. The story took place in Greek mythology, with Kratos on a vengeful mission to destroy Ares, and then later the king of the Greek gods, Zeus. The new game takes place in a Norse mythology backdrop, and features an older, wiser Kratos. He also has a son now, adding an extra dimension to the gameplay and story. The gameplay is also less like a beat 'em up, and more of a traditional action adventure like Horizon Zero Dawn.

What's next for the franchise? With over 3.1 million copies sold, it stands to reason that Sony would want the series to continue. In an interview with Kotaku, God of War director Cory Barlog  says he has "five games" mapped out in his mind. That's not an official confirmation of a sequel, but it does sound like there could be more things to look forward to in this series.
