Godfall is a “looter slasher,” which is like a looter shooter only you don’t shoot anything--you cut them.

Or shank them. Or stab them. Or crush them to a pulp. Really, there appears to be a lot of different options in Godfall, depending on your preferred playstyle.

Godfall got its first gameplay trailer last week along with the PS5 reveal. What we saw was a little bit confusing if you’re totally new to the game, but previous info teasers can give us a bit more of a complete story.

You’re an unnamed warrior on the world of Aperion. Gods are real, and you’re out to kill the god Macros because he’s infringing on an anime copyright. Actually, it’s because he’s insane and wants to bring about the global apocalypse.

To do that, you’ll have a wide array of arms and armaments, including one of three different “Valorplates,” which is Godfall-speak for armor. These Valorplates will define your character’s class and also what crazy abilities they have. Your fighting style is dictated by your weapon, which you can swap around until you find one that you like.

Godfall describes itself as a “looter slasher,” which doesn’t really require that much in terms of explanation. It’s like a looter shooter, such as Destiny, Borderlands 3, or The Division 2, only you’re not shooting anything. Instead, you’re slashing enemies to bits. Or running them through with a pike. Or crushing them with a maul. The list goes on, but you get the point.

The gameplay trailer made Godfall sort of look like Dynasty Warriors without all the millions of trash soldiers. Instead, fights are somewhat more meaningful as you take on skilled opponents rather than unskilled marionettes.

Apparently the combo system employed in Godfall was mostly inspired by Monster Hunter World, so use that as your starting point for the action.

Godfall will arrive with the PS5 sometime later this holiday season, or you can get it on PC via the Epic Games Store. Yes, Godfall is an Epic exclusive.
