Although it was cancelled years ago, SEGA is giving us a glimpse of what could have been – a prototype of Golden Axe Reborn will be downloadable on Steam later this month. Available for just one day, between October 18 and October 19, you'll need to move fast if you want to download and play the elusive content.

The game will only encompass one level – which Sega likes to call "Golden Axed" – but according to the Steam description it will offer "a rare peek behind the curtain at the sometimes tumultuous world of video game development."

This year marks Sega's 60th Anniversary, and this short playable prototype is the company's way of saying thanks to all its fans. It's aware that the game will be rough around the edges and full of bugs, but it's happy to bring a bit more Golden Axe content to longtime fans of the series.

The studio working on the title, Sega Studios Australia, was shutdown in 2013 and development on Gold Axe Reborn was cancelled. Other reboots were canned along with it, including Altered Beast, Shinobi, and Streets of Rage. While Streets of Rage eventually got a much-deserved sequel, we're still waiting on the next installment in the Shinobi and Altered Beast series.

Golden Axed: A Cancelled Prototype will be available on Steam between October 18 and October 19.
