Cartoons in the 80s and 90s shared a common theme of good versus evil. Children watched their favorite heroes and heroines fight evil with the power of justice. They would find themselves captivated by these characters who had to overcome hardships to defeat the evil that threatened the world. After the final battle was won, the show would end. If the show were popular enough, it would continue for another series with a new villain.

Our favorite cartoons in the 90s began to change up the formula. Instead of a villain-of-the-week storyline, cartoon characters lived in modern times where superpowers didn't exist. They had to use the power of communication to resolve conflicts. Fans of the shows wanted to see their favorite characters in different fantasy situations. Fanart of 90s characters as medieval warriors or superheroes began to creep up online.

Some fans decided to change their favorite characters in more villainous ways. They reimagined 90s characters as evil beings. Instead of trying to help others, they now want to destroy everyone and take over the world. If a character already had bad tendencies, artists further exaggerated their evil personality.

Our collection of fanart shows some of the most villainous reimaginations of cartoon characters from the 1990s. In the words of Jessica Rabbit: They're not bad. They're just drawn that way.

25 Big Bro Better Watch His Back

via: perpetualfanboy.deviantart.com

Arthur is a cartoon series on PBS Kids that debuted in 1996. The show covered a variety of topics kids have to go through. The cartoon focused on the aardvark child Arthur. He had two younger sisters, Kate and Dora Winifred (or most commonly known as"D.W."). Kate is a young infant and mostly harmless. Arthur's second younger sister, D.W. is a sassy four-year-old.

In "Arthur's Big Hit," Arthur worked for days on building a model airplane. D.W. thought it was a toy. She took it outside, believing it was a toy, and ended up breaking his plane. D.W. felt no remorse. Arthur finally reached his breaking point and struck her. It was a shocking episode. D.W. couldn't defend herself. In this fan art by perpetualfanboy, D.W. is the one who has had enough.

D.W. isn't going to put up with her big brother's attitude any longer.

D.W. is ready to defend herself with hand-to-hand-combat. This four-year-old isn't going to let anyone push her around. The spooky event has caused her heart to harden. With such a stern look on her face, we're scared of what she might do next.

24 Too Fast And Too Bad

via: ss2sonic.deviantart.com

Sonic the Hedgehog is a well-known video game character. Sonic got his start in the original Sega series, where he had to destroy enemies that were trapping his friends. The Sonic the Hedgehog series has continued for decades. Sonic has also starred in some 90s cartoon series. He was always seen as the cool blue dude who helped his friends and annoyed Dr. Robotnik. Though he defeats Dr. Robotnik every single time, the doctor always returns to try and conquer the world again. Sonic is always ready to take on the evil doctor and anything he throws at the blue hedgehog.

Thanks to these games and cartoons, we know that Sonic the Hedgehog has had a long legacy of being a good hero. When most fans think of evil hedgehogs in the series, their first thought may be of Shadow the Hedgehog instead.

SS2Sonic on DeviantArt twisted Sonic into an evil villain. His eyes display a scary glow, and a red cape is wrapped around his shoulders. The red cape may signify an allegiance to Dr. Robotnik, or just a general interest in evil outerwear. Sonic's friends will be shocked to see their hero turn evil. Shadow may find himself scared of the blue menace wearing a red cape.

23 Sugar, Spice, And Everything Rotten

via: tunetiada24.deviantart.com

The Powerpuff Girls are the protectors of Townsville. They were created by a happy accident from sugar, spice, everything nice, and Chemical X. Though they appear to act like normal little girls, they are given fatherly guidance from their creator, Professor Utonium. Blossom has served as a leader of the trio in the original series into the anime adaptation. Blossom is a little shy but has a kindness her sisters appreciate. Buttercup was always slightly tougher, and more than willing to jump into a fight. During the original 90s series, she was the only character tempted to become a Gangrene Gang member. After seeing the gang commit evil acts, she snapped out of her adoration of the group. In the end, Buttercup stayed true to her virtuous roots.

Tunetiada24 has reimaged the girls into stylish villains. We're not sure if Mojo Jojo has used a scientific experiment to change the girls for the worse. They may be growing up with poor influences and chose a life of evil. Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles are still wearing their signature colors, but have decorated their clothing with skulls. With such evil kids on the loose, Townsville better watch out for these dangerous villains.

22 Wakko, Yakko, And Pure Strangeness

via: synysterangel.deviantart.com

The Animaniacs were locked up in a water tower for years. When they were finally let loose, they created mayhem for the cast and crew of the studio. Their hi-jinks weren't meant to hurt others. They only wanted to have fun. Blaming them for what happened is difficult. They were trapped for so long that they want to know the outside world again. Yakko served as the group's oldest brother and leader. He often tried to command his younger siblings around on new plans for destruction. Dot was more concerned with looking cute. She tried to manipulate people by appearing adorable. Dot's act often worked on the unsuspecting studio crew. Wakko, which curiously sounds like "wacko" was true to his name. He was the wildest of the bunch and also the only sibling to wear a shirt.

Synysterangel shows us a much more twisted look on the sibling's fate.

Instead of being more forgiving about the events that took place, they've turned evil. Their teeth have become broken from years of malnutrition. Their eyes are drooping due to the sunlight's bright rays. They look ready to dominate the world and while having fun at the same time.

21 Going To Be The Best, No Matter Who's In the Way

via: charlienozaki.deviantart.com

The Pokémon anime series has followed the adventures of 10-year-old Ash Ketchum since 1997. Ash has a kindness in his heart that has set him apart from other characters on the show. He wants his Pokémon to do their best and always looks out for their safety. His purity didn't go unnoticed on-screen. Who can forget Pokémon: The First Movie when he turned to stone and was restored by the tears of his friends? Ash's kindness doesn't go unnoticed in the series, which explains why he captured his childhood friend, Serena's, heart. When Team Rocket attempts to take his best friend, Pikachu, captive, he does his best to protect his favorite Pokémon. He doesn't stay mad at Jessie and James and is still willing to help them when they're in danger.

Charlienozaki shows a darker side of Ash. He's no longer a little boy with stars in his eyes. Ash wants to be the best, no matter who gets hurt. If his Pokémon are defeated in battle, it's because they aren't strong enough. Even Team Rocket would be scared to steal Pikachu from this battle-hardened trainer.

20 The Spy Who Taught Me Science

via: whutnot.deviantart.com

Ms. Valerie Frizzle is the bright and cheery school teacher of The Magic School Bus series. She always has a new adventure for her young students. After climbing onto the bus and putting on their seatbelts, they're instantly transported into the world of Science. The students face many dangers, but Ms. Frizzle is always there to lend a helping hand. She would never let anything happen to her kids. Thanks to her leadership, the students were treated to experiences that would last a lifetime. Ms. Frizzle wants to ensure that her students have the hands-on training that will prepare them for high school and beyond. We don't know much information about Ms. Frizzle, except that she has infinite knowledge about the world around her.

Whutnot has reimagined Ms. Frizzle. After her teaching days were over, she decided to team up with her old friend, Mary Poppins. Together, the pair work as spies. They only work for the richest clients, or maybe they only take the cases that will teach them valuable lessons. Both women have a lot to teach each other, which makes them an interesting team. It seems that Ms. Frizzle's adventures won't end after her students graduate.

19 At Least His Hair Remained Pristine

via: zombieportraits.com (Rob Sacchetto)

Johnny Bravo is an arrogant and conceited young man who is always trying to find a date. Although he seems like a villain, he is a good guy at his core. When Johnny isn't looking for a new romance, he's helping out his Grandmother or his neighbor and best friend, Carl. Carl is less confident than Johnny, but his best friend doesn't mind. Opposites often attract in cartoons.

What Johnny lacks in wits, he makes up for in strength and fantastic hair.

Johnny obviously has a muscular body with strength to match. If he used those muscles for evil, the people he cares about might be in danger. Rob Saccheto reimagined Johnny Bravo as an evil zombie. What was once a well-mannered young man is now a brainless creature looking for his next human meal. One impressive thing to notice about this zombie-fied Johnny Bravo is that his hair has remained perfectly in place. Johnny's outrageous personality still shines, even though his body is decaying. Johnny may have paid too much attention to his hair to protect himself from a hazardous zombie bite. Carl might have to toughen up to protect Johnny's Grandmother from her now-evil grandson.

18 From Shy To Wild Child

via: z-lady.deviantart.com

Chuckie Finster is the tallest of the four Rugrats babies, but also the most weak-willed. He stands out with his wild red hair, thick purple glasses, and shoes that can't stay tied. Chuckie is always worried about getting sick or hurt. Sometimes his fears keep the rest of his friends back from uncovering new adventures, but Chuckie's friendship is more important to the group. His best friend Tommy is always willing to help Chuckie become braver in a world filled with hazards. Tommy can't protect him from everything. Chuckie tries to survive by staying on the good side of the other kids. This might not always work with other kids, like Tommy's older cousin, Angelica. Keeping a low profile may help Chuckie (safely) reach adulthood.

Z-Lady on DeviantArt has other plans for the young Finster. Chuckie just so happens to resemble another evil character with wild red hair. This artist shows what could happen if the evil villain Chuckie doll from Child's Play possessed the innocent Rugrats baby. The knife in his hand may lead to dangerous results. After seeing this reimagination of Chuckie, we're sure that Angelica won't be teasing him any time soon.

17 We’ll Miss His Inspiring Monologues

via: vagabondx.deviantart.com

The Tick was a cartoon that aired on Fox Kids every Saturday. The Tick lived in a world where superheroes and supervillains were a normal part of life. It wasn't shocking to see a superhero fly over your head on your way to work. The Tick was a giant blue hero who wanted to protect his city at all costs. He was a stereotypical hero who believed in justice and helping those who can't help themselves. His trusty sidekick is Arthur, who is a moth. He was once an accountant before teaming up with The Tick. Arthur doesn't have any superpowers of his own outside of his suit, but his heart is filled with justice. Together, they work hard to clean up the city.

Vagabondx shows us what this superhero duo would look like as super villains. The Tick has torn off sleeves, which show off his muscles. Arthur wears a harness and tactical pants to help him gain the upper hand in battle. In typical villain form, they both wear frightening scowls on their faces. For the sake of the city, we hope that their superheroine colleague and friend, American Maid, can stop their evil rampage.

16 Maybe He’s Better As A Villain

via: corankizerstone.deviantart.com

Inspector Gadget works hard to protect his home from the evil Dr. Claw. The Inspector has an extensive arsenal of tools to help him in any case, but he doesn't put them to good use. With a shout of "Go Go Gadget!," the Inspector used his robotic neck and limbs to climb higher or view windows ten-stories off the ground. He's often treated like a bumbling buffoon who can't do anything right. The Inspector's heart is in the right place. He wants to do his best to protect the people closest to him. His niece, Penny, and her dog, Brain, often help him solve cases. They worry Gadget will get hurt during his investigations and jump in for every mission. They end up doing all the work while the Inspector receives all of the credit.

Corankizerstone shows us what Inspector gadget would be like if he were both competent and evil.

He would be able to use his gadgets to evil use to take down his enemies. In this artwork, it seems that he has already defeated Dr. Claw and the entire city. Though Gadget may have turned evil, he will still protect Penny at all costs. Some good traits never change.

15 Here’s Ren!

via: jonsnow01.deviantart.com

Ren and Stimpy was a disturbing show that was part of the Nicktoons Sunday morning lineup. The show often contained gross or uncomfortable scenes that made you wonder how this cartoon got past the censors. Ren and Stimpy also portrayed high levels of violence. Ren was a short chihuahua with a severe temper. His best friend, and often the victim, was a red cat named Stimpy. Every week, the pair were thrown into crazy adventures. Though the show was named after the cat and dog, it also contained skits for fake commercials such as "Log" or the superhero Powdered Toast Man. Children loved the randomness of each episode.

Jonsnow1 has reimagined Ren as Jack from The Shining. Stimpy is trying to hide from his former best friend. The only thing he has to keep him safe is a fish. The fish doesn't appear to have any special abilities to help Stimpy out of this mess. Ren has already chopped through the door. His ax didn't take any damage, much to Stimpy's surprise. The poor cat has nowhere else to run and will have to outwit Ren to escape. His only options now are to end his fish friend or hope that Ren snaps out of this moment of rage.

14 The Good Doctor Is Out

via: artstation.com (Patricia Casarrubios)

Futurama primarily focused on the adventures of the first Philip J. Fry. He was a pizza delivery boy who accidentally fell into a cryogenic pod. Fry awoke years later into the future. His best friends became a robot, cyclops, and an unusual humanoid crustacean. John A. Zoidberg claims he's a doctor, but we're not so sure of his qualifications. He mistakes Fry's gender when they first meet and often gets other diagnoses wrong with disastrous results.

The other Planet Express employees on the show seem to tolerate him since he works for the Professor. Zoidberg is portrayed as a comedic character who's always getting things wrong. We can't help but feel bad for him since his paychecks mysteriously become slimmer, and he doesn't have a place to call home.

Patricia Casarrubios has reimagined Zoidberg as a more competent Doctor. He appears more crustacean than humanoid. His eyes have an evil glare that makes us think twice about asking him for medical help. His giant claw hands don't help ease our fears, either. He may accidentally snip something we wanted to keep. Zoidberg may be an unlikely hero, but we can easily see him as a villain.

13 The Adventure Went Wrong

Dora the Explorer is a children's cartoon that has fascinated young children for years. Grown-ups quickly grew tired of her voice and repetitive adventures. On the other hand, young children love seeing the new worlds she finds. Nothing could stop Dora in her path, and she always accomplished her goals. She often breaks the fourth wall to get the audience's help to complete her weekly adventures. Dora travels the land with her best friend and pet, Boots, and her trusty singing map. She always wears a smile on her face and is excited to explore the world. Dora's lone adventures into the forest have its dangers. She's attacked by a sneaky fox on almost every episode.

This artist has reimagined Dora and Boots into much different characters.

On one of Dora's adventures, she may have been cursed or somehow turned evil. She retains her face, but looks as if she's been through a lot. They both look angry, which makes us wonder if something went terribly wrong on one of her adventures. We're sure that she could find a way to go back to normal.

12 Think Twice Before Joining His Clubhouse

via: twitter.com

Mickey Mouse is not only the hero to a long line of cartoon shows but also the mascot of The Walt Disney Company. He was first created in the late 1920s but continues to have a new series every decade. Mickey Mouse's design has changed significantly over the years. His eyes first started out as black dots on his face. Thanks to the magic of technology, Mickey is now a 3D mouse with a bright smile. He's ready to take on any adventures that Disney places in his path. Mickey Mouse is not only a favorite among children and grown-ups but also his fellow Disney friends. He's kept the same friends, including Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse, and Goofy, for decades. Mickey appears to be everyone's best friend.

This artist wants you to think twice when you look at Mickey. Is Mickey as angelic as Disney has led us to believe? This artist has reimagined the cartoon mouse as an evil creature. His eyes are crazy, and his teeth are now sharp fangs. This Mickey doesn't want to help his former friends. He only wants to make sure they go in the worst ways possible.

11 Don’t Try To Steal His Honey

via: cameronharperart.deviantart.com

Winnie the Pooh originated as a series of books from A. A. Milne. He has been a beloved character for children for decades. Eventually, Disney began to produce cartoons around the sweet bear. Winnie the Pooh has had several cartoon series over the years. During the 1990s, he starred in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Pooh Bear is best described as a slow-moving bear who has a never-ending hunger for honey. He acts slightly childish because he is always thinking of his hunger before helping his friends. In the end, Winnie the Pooh is still someone all of the animals consider a friend, especially Piglet. Their friend, Christopher Robin, often visited to join them on adventures. Together, they go on fun adventures that always lead to a happy ending. Winnie the Pooh always has been gentle at heart and seen as a giant, adorable teddy bear.

What if Winnie the Pooh was secretly hiding an uncontrollable, evil rage? Cameron Harper Art shows a frightening transformation from sweet bear to a terrible monster. Bees have tried to keep Winnie the Pooh from their beehive. Unfortunately for these innocent bees, when Winnie the Pooh wants honey, he will do anything to fill his honey pot.

10 The Villain We Never Wanted

via: eric-arts-inc.deviantart.com

The Dragon Ball series revolves around several superpowered beings who want to prove who is the strongest fighter alive. It follows Goku, a young martial artist with a passion for food and fighting. From a young age, Goku's primary interest has revolved around watching battles or participating in them. He is pure at heart, which enables him to ride the Nimbus Cloud without any issues. As a grown-up, Goku does his best to protect his family, friends, and his home: Earth. After meeting Goku, many of his enemies, like Vegeta, end up respecting his strength. They know how much Goku loves the Earth and its people. Goku wasn't always meant to be a hero. He is a Saiyan and was sent to Earth to destroy the planet.

Goku was shown as a villain on the most current Dragon Ball Super series, but many have redrawn the hero as an evil fighter for years.

Eric-arts-inc shows Goku reimagined as an evil villain. If Goku didn't lose his memory as soon as he landed on Earth, he could have grown into an evil Saiyan bent on destroying the world. We're glad that Goku is on our side.

9 Not Little Miss Perfect

via: neoslashott.deviantart.com

The Hey Arnold! series follows a group of kids in a fictional city. Lila Sawyer is one of the newest students in fourth grade. She's polite and well-mannered, which makes Arnold fall for her. Of course, this puts Lila in the crosshairs of Helga, who has loved the football head since she was in preschool. Lila isn't interested in rivalries. Her focus is on making friends and not enemies. Her sweet personality is what makes her classmates enjoy her company.

Neoslashott reimagines Lila as a girl who has grown tired of being "miss perfect." Her hair is long and loose and no longer held back with restricting pigtails. Instead of wearing a simple dress, she dons a tube top with matching tights. To further show off her bad side, Lila wears a black leather jacket with a matching spiked cuff bracelet on her right hand. Lila is also into air guitar. She no longer feels the need to restrict the hobbies she enjoys to keep her appearance as a good girl. Though we'll miss the "perfect" Lila, it appears she is having much more fun being a perfect villain. Hopefully, Helga will decide to give the new girl another chance.

8 No One’s Party Animal

via: soul71.deviantart.com

Jim Henson's Muppet Babies featured baby-fied versions of The Muppets characters. All of the characters live together in a nursery. Their caretaker is named Nanny, and we never see her face. She seems to care about the babies but doesn't spend much time with them. She mostly leaves the babies to alone so they can have adventures within the safety of the nursery. Their adventures were mostly hallucinations, but they felt real to the babies.

The power of imagination was a strong theme of the Muppet Babies series. Animal may have been imagining the events of what we witnessed during the cute cartoon. Augie Pagan has reimagined Animal to be a frightening villain. His teeth are dangerously sharp. Animal's eyes are dark and are piercing into his next victim. Chains have to hold back Animal from escaping. We're not sure how Animal ended up like this. One of his close friends may have had to lock him up temporarily until he recovered from his harmful ways. If Animal were to escape, we're not sure if he'll be happy or so enraged at his captor that he attacks the first muppet he sees. Either way, Animal is chained up for both his safety and ours.

7 Team Rocket Would Avoid This Pokémon At All Costs

via: departedpro.deviantart.com

Pokémon is known for its preteen hero, Ash Ketchum. He wants to become the best Pokémon Trainer that the world has ever seen. Pikachu was his very first Pokémon. The decision was forced upon the young trainer. Ash didn't want to choose Pikachu at first, but all of the other Pokémon were taken. Pikachu didn't choose Ash at first, either. He refused to stay inside of his Pokéball and didn't respect his new owner. The pair worked out their differences and became one of the most well-known partnerships. The electric-type Pokémon has stayed by his side for years, and they've become best friends. Pikachu is similar in personality to Ash, as he is kind-hearted and always tries to help his fellow Pokémon.

If Pikachu never met Ash, he may have turned into a creature meant for evil.

Departedpro has reimaged Pikachu as an evil creature who won't be captured easily. His claws are razor-sharp, and his eyes glow with dangerous electricity. He's an aggressive Pokémon that is prepared to hurt anyone that dares threaten him. Without Ash's kindness to guide him, Pikachu would have turned into a small ball of pure evil.

6 She’s No One’s Princess

via: kasami-sensei.deviantart.com

Princess Jasmine may be the primary love interest of Disney's Aladdin, but she is not a damsel-in-distress. When the Sultan and Prince Ali speak about winning her heart, Jasmine makes it clear she is not a prize to be won. With her pet tiger Rajah at her side, Jasmine feels powerful, but at the same time, she is powerless. Jasmine is still a mere human stuck behind the palace walls. She is a kind-hearted princess who cares about her people. Even after escaping the palace, there was very little Jasmine could do without getting in harm's way.

Kasami-sensei has twisted Jasmine's good girl image around. Jasmine has taken control of Jafar, once the kingdom's Royal Vizier, but now a genie. His lamp is at her side, and he doesn't seem very pleased with his new owner. Iago, who was once Jafar's pet parrot, doesn't mind. He's not a captive of the lamp and is happy to fly by evil Jasmine's side. With the power of an evil genie at her command, Jasmine is no longer content to rule over Agrabah. She now has her sights set on ruling the galaxy.
