DC FanDome blessed Batman fans with a barrage of new Batman media this past weekend. From the new Batman movie trailer to the gameplay trailer showcasing the upcoming Gotham Knights game – DC pulled out all the stops with their fan event.

Gotham Knights is set in its own world, seperate from Rocksteady's Arkham universe, and follows the Bat-Family taking up Batman's mantle after his mysterious death. While the Bat-Family challenges the Gotham underworld, a shadowy force known as the Court of Owls keeps a close eye on the crime fighters. While this sounds exciting, some fans, us included, worry that this new adventure might be too similar to another upcoming superhero-centric game.

How Gotham Knights And Marvel's Avengers Could Be Similar

In a now-deleted Reddit post, user Eren_Jaeger_The_Goat discussed their concern that Gotham Knights might be a little too similar to the new Avengers game. The main points revolved around the RPG elements shown in the gameplay trailer, outlining why they're feeling apprehensive. Unfortunately, when we see these types of mechanics, there is a chance that the game will be muddled by mechanics that have plagued similar open-world titles in the past — looking at you Ubisoft.

The most significant similarity between the two games begins with combat. In both games, enemies have health bars. This system strays away from other popular combat systems, like Arkham Knight, where enemies take a set number of hits before being knocked out. Seeing a health bar is worrying because the first thing to pop into our minds are bullet-sponge enemies. In the Avengers beta, there has been a fair share of bullet-sponges that solely exist to drag out gameplay. While our look at Gotham Knights was brief, these RPG elements are seen throughout the gameplay. Tanky enemies do not seem out of the question yet.

Marvel's Avengers has taken the RPG route with a gear system on top of standard skill trees, where players can grind away at missions to get better gear and improve their characters. We know Gotham Knights will have character customization and currencies to some extent, as the gameplay reveal showed glimpses into collection and customization mechanics. However, RPG elements do not always equate to live service tactics, and Gotham Knights could have a more streamlined gear system that does not feel cynically tacked on for microtransactions. The gear system in Gotham Knights could even be solely cosmetic; we just have to wait and see.

How Gotham Knights Stands Out From Marvel's Avengers

Gotham Knights is being marketed as a feature-complete game, whereas Avengers is a live service game with slow content release. Feature-complete does not mean there is no room for some form of DLC or microtransactions, but for the time being, Gotham Knights doesn't seem to be aiming to drain wallets. Marvel's Avengers, on the other hand, is your typical live service experience, where grinding for gear and repeating events is the name of the game. Additionally, Gotham Knights seems to allow players to explore an open world map, similar to the past Arkham titles, whereas Avengers is not an open world.

Not much is known about Gotham Knights, and with good reason since the game is still early in development. For now, it is a matter of waiting and seeing. While RPG elements and crafting are present in the gameplay, we do not have confirmation that Gotham Knights will be riddled with microtransactions. Jumping the gun on assumptions can sour expectations early. Likewise, being swept up by fan excitement can set expectations too high.

For many players, the most significant factor that will help them decide between the two games is the live service aspect. Even if Marvel's Avengers is polished, many might be against supporting another live service title, seeing the practice as something ethically dubious. Here's to hoping that Gotham Knights is a fun, different superhero experience.
