The PlayStation 5 ships with an 825 GB SSD. The benefits of the SSD are legion of course, making for faster loading times and allowing game developers to pull off new tricks. But the amount of actual usable space is smaller, coming in at around 667 GB, which makes having lots of games tricky especially when said games are big hefty files.

One of the most eagerly awaited PlayStation games coming out this year is Gran Turismo 7. The legendary racing series will be a return to form from the looks of things, with classic courses such as Deep Forest Raceway making a comeback. Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi has said the new game will follow the traditions of the series, with a proper career mode, in contrast with the more online-focused GT Sport.

But one thing that GT Sport was notorious for was its large download size, with it taking up a huge amount of storage space on the PS4. The cars in the game have been rendered with an exhaustive attention to detail, bringing a level of realism for which the series is famed. But such loving care paid to the cars has a price and the file size for the latest versions of GT Sport, which has been updated with new tracks and cars over the years, weighs in at around 102.5 GB.

Gran Turismo 7 real-time ray tracing reflections on PS5

The download size for the next entry meanwhile has been revealed. Gran Turismo 7 on the PS5 will be 89.45 GB, according to an account that tracks these things. Now this is the pre-load and doesn't include the day-one patch, but it's somewhat surprising that the new Gran Turismo will be actually smaller than the older game.

Gran Turismo 7 could be using the new compression tools that longtime Sony collaborator Mark Cerny has spoken about. These development tools allow game devs to reduce the footprint of their games using fancy compression techniques. But it's also true that Gran Turismo 7 could eventually balloon in size once we add in the inevitable updates and patches, as well as probable additions such as new racetracks and cars.

Still, it's good to know that Gran Turismo 7 will be taking up less space than its predecessor and is in fact smaller than a game like Horizon Forbidden West. But that 667 GB of usable space is starting to look awfully small.
