It's been a rough few days for Gran Turismo 7. In terms of critics review, it sits at a Metascore of 87, a great score for any game. But user reviews tell a whole different story. As it currently stands, the game has a user Metascore of just 2.5. Scroll down, and you'll see so many zero's and one's that you might think it's binary.

But how did it come to this? It all started with the game's 1.07 update. Gran Turismo 7 was already receiving flak for its microtransactions. The amount of credits required to unlock some of the popular cars either requires an almost impossible amount of grind, or – of course – splashing the cash to straight-up buy the required credits.

While this was frustrating enough, the update went ahead and made unlocking these cars even more difficult by lowering the amount of prize money players earn upon winning races. As it stands, it's abundantly clear that the devs really want you to spend money on the microtransactions.

However, that wasn't the end of it. The game's servers soon went down without explanation, resulting in players who paid for the game being unable to access it for over 24 hours. Game director Kazunori Yamauchi released a statement saying, "Immediately before the release of the 1.07 update, we discovered an issue where the game would not start properly in some cases on product versions for the PS4 and PS5. It was a rare issue that was not seen during tests on the development hardware or the QA sessions prior to the release, but in order to prioritize the safety of the save data of the users, we decided to interrupt the release of the 1.07 update, and to make a 1.08 correctional update."

It also should be noted that the microtransactions only went live after reviews went live. This series of events has effectively tanked the game's reputation and User Metascore. Yamauchi has said that the team is working to "revise GT7 so that as many players as possible can enjoy the game,” but the road ahead looks pretty long and winding.
